Show JIMMY OONXERS WINS CROWN 3 fee first time Jimmy ias won at f-leldon it seemed like 2 a fairy tale. He and Chris Evert were the-tournament's the-tournament's "love double" in 1974, went to the victory ball as an engaged couple and danced to the musical strains of "The Girl That I Marry." There was no dancing at Sunday night's champions dinner. Martina Navratilova, a three-set winner over Mrs. Lloyd in the women's final, teasingly popped open an umbrella before her victory speech and told the gathering, "The weatherman said it was going to clear today, but I didn't trust him." Eight years after he won his first Wimbledon title, Connors, now 29, thanked the management committee for its more helpful attitude toward the players, thanked his wife, Patti, and then paid tribute to John McEnroe, whom he had beaten earlier in the day in five long sets. "The final we had was the way it should be," Connors said of his 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6, 6-1 victory. British sports fans agreed, toasting Connors Monday as the popular champion. In 1974, Ken Rosewall, a sentimental runnerup at 39, was the people's choice. "I was out on the street this morning," Connors said, packing at his hotel, for a return to the United States Tuesday, "and I think everybody in London watched the match." GULLS OUTSLUG DUKES Chambers gave Albuquerque some "lip" Friday night when his high infield bounder hit the lip of the infield grass and bounced 20 feet over second baseman Ross Jones' head to score two runs and put the Gulls ahead to stay in a 13-13 thriller at Derks Field Friday night. The big outfielder collected three hits in five at bats and drove in three runs, while Jim Maler also had three safeties and two RBIs. Vance McHenry chipped with a double and his third homer of the season to account for three tallies as the Gulls rallied for five runs in the eighth inning to erase a-10-8 deficit. As it turned out, the Gulls needed every one of those runs because powerful Greg Brook crashed his 30th home run of the season with one on in the top of the ninth to pull the Dukes dangerously close. Starter Tracy Harris came out of the bullpen and earned his first save when he retired Candy Maldanado on a fly to right which Casey Parsons hauled down at the warning track. Brian Snyder got the win and squared his record at 3-3. Joe Beckwith was the victim of the Gulls' eighth inning rally when Chambers got his lucky bounce and he suffered his fifth loss in 10 decisions. The Dukes broke an 8-8 tie in the eighth, chasing reliever Steve Finch. Albuquerque took advantage of three walks in the inning and the free passes did the most damage. |
