Jenkins captured the 145 pound title in the Vernal Tournament of Champions when he downed Hamel due to a referees' decision. Vernal tfourney tfitfles Two Uintah Utes, Brett Brown, 98" and Pat Jenkins, 145, garnered championship crowns in the Vernal Tournament of Champions, Saturday. Brown improved his perfect record to 15-0 when he edged Jim Smoot of Box Elder, 4 to 2, for first place in the 98 pound class. Smoot grabbed a 2-0 lead when he gained a takedown, but Brown tied up the championship contest at 2-2 with a reversal in the first round. Brown gained his winning points in the second round when he gained a reversal. Brown advanced into the championship contest when he pinned Conrad Abram of Preston in 35 seconds and blanked Ty Howard of Viewmont, 9-0. Uintah sophomore, Pat Jenkins, garnered first place in the 145 pound class when he won a wild affair with Mike Hamel of Green River due to a referees' decision. Hamel gained a 1-0 lead in the first round when he was awarded a stalling point and garnered a neutral for a 2-0 lead. However, Jenkins dropped Hamel for a takedown and forced the contest into overtime. Hamel acquired a neutral in the second round in overtime, over-time, but Jenkins gained a takedown for a 2-1 lead. Jenkins was called for stalling in the third round and the contest ended in a 2-2 tie. However referees selected Jenkins as the winner. win-ner. Jenkins advanced into the championship encounter when he pinned Robert Atkinson of Preston in the first round and blanked Doug Dredge of Skyline, 8 to 0. Three Uintah Utes, Josh Reynolds, 119; Randy Smuin, 155 and David Gentry, 112, pocketed second place titles. Jeff Good, 126, placed third and Darrin Bailey, 132 and Roger Griffin, heavyweight, netted fourth places. Reynolds dropped Gary Dallman of Green River for a takedown in the first round and gained a reversal in the third round for a 4-0 lead. However, Dallman gained a reversal and a near fall at the buzzer on mental mistakes by Reynolds to tie up the contest at 4-4. Dallman pinned Reynolds with 15 seconds left in the first round. Reynolds pinned Doug Smith of Preston in the second round and downed Ute junior varsity tussler, Seymore Bedoni, 6-1. Smuin acquired a neutral with 1:53 left in the third round for a 3 to 2 lead, but a mental mistake by Smuin enabled Mike Beck, Green River, to gain a takedown and a three-point near fall for a 7-3 advantage with 1:07 remaining. Smuin gained a neutral to make the final score, 7 to 4, in favor of Beck. Smuin dropped Beck for a takedown in the first round, but Beck acquired two neutrals to tie up the contest at 2-2. Smuin pinned Todd Palmer of Mountain Moun-tain View at the 1:35 mark of the first round and pinned Doug Bangerter of Viewmont with seven seconds left in the first round. The losses by Smuin and Reynolds in the championship matches weTe their first setbacks of the season-Smuin season-Smuin and Reynolds have records of 14 wins and 1 loss. Gentry was pinned by Stewart Richards, a defending state champion wtih 38 seconds left in the first round of the 112 pound championship contesi Gentry pinned Gary Hansen of Mountain View with one second left in the third round and downed Lee Gonzales Gon-zales of Rock Springs on a referee s decision. Uintah's Gentry jumped out to a 2-0 lead due to a takedown in the first round of the semi-final contest with Gonzales, but the Rock Springs tussler gained a neutral in the first round and a reversal in the second round for a 3-2 advantage. The match was forced into overtime when Gentry was awarded a stalling point with eight seconds left in the contest. Gentry gained a takedown in the first round, but Gonzales tied up the encounter en-counter with a reversal. Gentry acquired a neutral in the second round and a 3-2 lead. Gonzales knotted the score at 3-3 when he nabbed a neutral with ten seconds remaining.. However, the referees picked Gentry as the winner. Good pocketed third place in the 126 pound class when he nipped Sil Jeppson of Box Elder. Good gained a two-point near fall and a neutral in the second round and Jeppson cut Good's lead to 3-2 3-2 with a neutral. Good gained a reversal and Jeppson pocketed a neutral in the -third round. The win over Jeppson improved Good's record to 15 wins and 1 loss. Good pinned Dan Johnson of Rock Springs in the : first round and was defeated by Darren Hollingsworth of Preston, 9 to 2. Good advanced into the battle for third place when he defeated Chris Trumble of Green River. Bailey placed fourth in the 132 pound class when he was nipped by John Anastos, Green River, 3 to 2. Anastos had a 3-1 lead after two rounds due to a reversal and a penalty point. Bailey gained escapes in the second and third round, but couldn't acquire one more point for the tie. Bailey pinned Brooke Denkers of Box Elder in the second round and was downed by Chris Humphreys, 10 to 5. Bailey toppled Dave Scott of Skyline. Griffin dropped a heartbreaking contest to Shawn Gardner of Box Elder in the heavyweight division. Griffin gained takedowns in the first and second round for a 4-2 lead, but Gardner Gard-ner gained a two-point near fall in the third round to tie up the contest at 4-4. Griffin pocketed a neutral with 30 seconds left for a 5-4 lead. Uintah's Griffin leaped after Gardner on a try for two points, but Gardner acquired the takedown with five seconds left to defeat Griffin, 6 to 5, in the battle for - third place.
