Show Uintah cagers drop close encounters The Uintah Ute sophomore team won the third and fourth quarters, but lost the first and second quarters and were defeated by the Cyprus Pirates in Vernal, Friday, 42 to 40. Cyprus jumped out to an 18 to 12 lead in the first quarter and had a 28 to 21 lead after two quarters of action. Uintah put in eight points in the third quarter and held Cyprus to six points to cut the Pirate lead to five points, 34 to 29. Uintah scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and Cyprus put in eight points. Abegglen fired in three field goals in the final quarter for the Utes. Scoring points for the Utes were: Mike Weldon, 10; Doug Allen, 8; Abegglen, 6; Clark Emery, 6; Hansen, 6 and Galen Turner, 5. The Uintah junior varsity team had a 10 to 6 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 23 to 12 advantage after two quarters, but Cyprus outscored Uintah, 29 to 9, for a 41 to 32 advantage at the end of the third quarter. Both teams scored twenty points in the fourth quarter. The final score was: Cyprus, 61 and Uintah, 52. Gary Galley was the top scorer for the Uintah Utes with 16 points. Galley put in seven field goals and hit 2 out of 4 free throws. Neldon Seitz scored ten points on four field goals and two free throws. Also scoring points for Uintah were: Lynn Bigelow, 9; Dale Crowell, 8; Blake Ewell, 4; Paul Hacking, 3 and Steve Yadon, 2. Uintah put in 19 field goals and hit 14 out of 20 free throw attempts. |
