Governor pledges $8 million salt - l for direct-route rood to Bonanza si (In a meeting Thursday of last week ith Governor Scott Matheson in Salt ake City, local leaders were able to et a commitment from the state for $8 lillion for construction of a new direct-Mte direct-Mte road from Vernal to Bonanza. The new road, including a bridge cross the Green River, is estimated to ost between $17 to $21 million and is lightly over 30 miles. The road will 2ive direct access from Vernal to the loon Lake Power plant site, White -iver Shale Project, Paraho Project, vhite River Dam site, the existing jnerican Gilsonite plant at Bonanza and other proposed projects in the energy rich area of southeastern Uintah County. Senator Glade M. Sowards explained to Gov. Matheson the importance of the new road and the amount of state revenues the companies served by the road would bring into the state. Neal Domgaard, Uintah County Com-rmissioner, Com-rmissioner, also told the governor that this new road was needed immediately. The $8 million in state funds would come from mineral leasing and royalty money due the state. Deseret Generating and Transmission Tran-smission Cooperative has agreed to fund the remaining cost of the Bonanza road from prepaid state sales taxes to speed up the construction of the vital road. DG&T have asked that the road be started as soon as possible with the Bonanza segment finished this spring so access to the Moon Lake Project power site can be obtained. Uintah County, with assistance from the Utah Department of Transportation on the bridge portion, is engineering the road. |
