Rub-out oils are gaining popularity in Vernal Rub out oils, oils on canvas, pen and ink, standard oils, and water colors are the fields of art Janice Leech teaches and sells from her Jan Lee Studio located at 1320 West 2000 North in Vernal. Ver-nal. Janice was born in Los Angeles, Calif., to Keith and Joyce Larsen. Her parents are from Huntington, Utah. Cartooning in school is how Janice first started becoming interested in doing do-ing art as a vocation. She has been professional pro-fessional for two years. Janice attended San Juan College in Farmington, New Mexico majoring in art. She has studied art at universities and colleges in Mississippi, Texas, Utah and New Mexico. Mex-ico. She displayed her work in the UBIC Art Show in August of 1980 winning third place amateur general for her rub out oil of a fox. Janice presently has her work displayed at Arn's Woodshop, Dinah Jeans, and an interior decorating shop in Price. She had an art showing of her work at the Uintah County library two years ago. Rub out oils are basically done with cotton balls and Q-tips. Color is put into the composition then taken out of the work. Janice starts with masonite sealed seal-ed with white water acrylic paint. Then you paint your selection with oils. She states, "rub out oils must be done while they are wet. You can take a finished product home at the end of each class; that is what impressed me. It was a good feeling to take home a completed painting at the end of the session. For people who are doing it at home instead of in a class, if something happens that you must leave your work before it is completed it can be frozen until you have time to get back to polishing it off." Rub out oil is an ancient art form which used to take a long time to work on and complete. The art form was revised and now can be completed much faster with the same amount of quality. Janice taught rub out oil in Roosevelt from January to May of 1980 at Crafty Lady Hobby Shop. Janice commented, "People were very receptive to the art in Roosevelt. When I began to teach in Vernal I found the same amount of en-i en-i thusiasm. It has taken me about a year to get rub out oils to" catch on in Vernal." Ver-nal." Janice is teaching a six week rub out oil course at Ben Franklin in Vernal. She also teaches private and group lessons out of her studio. |
