Show Board looks to six-period day With registration already complete for the next year at the Vernal Junior High, the Uintah School Board approved ap-proved the school's six period scheduling, but the board recommended recom-mended the item come before the board next year before registration. At last Thursday's school board meeting, Dr. John Childs, junior high principal, presented a survey of junior high schools in Utah which showed that out of 60 schools interviewed, 51 have a seven period day, six have an eight period day, three have a six period day, and one of these, Orem Junior High School, is returning to a seven period day because of public pressure. Of 29 teachers who were questioned about the six period day at Vernal Junior High, 21 were in favor of the six-period six-period day and eight favored a seven period day. Dr. Childs told the board that although he favored a seven period day, "when students and teachers favor a six period day, it has a good effect." Childs also said that the Vernal Junior High, because of busing problems is in school a half an hour longer than other schools in the state. He noted that the problem with the six period day is it doesn't allow the AAAAAAAAAAAAA A a students enough electives. Gary Taylor, board member, said that a survey of the feeling of the parents of students should be made on the six period day and that the issue be brought before the board before Feb. 1, 1982. In other business, acting superintendent superin-tendent Philip Ellis reported that some adjustments have been made in staffing. staf-fing. Ellis said that Dale Harrison, who has been media coordinator at Todd Elementary, will be the assistant principal at West Junior High School for the remainder of the school year. Carol Latham will work in the school district office and will complete the assignment which Ellis had as assistant superintendent. Dr. Ed Oscarson reported on a meeting he attended with members from Duchesne School District on the feasibility of placing the ninth grade students at West Junior High School into Union High School for the coming school year. Since that meeting, Duchesne School District officials met with local patrons, and determined it not feasible to do the remodeling ' required to move the ninth grade to Union before the beginning of the coming school year. The Uintah School Board mentioned it was in favor of the move if the Duchesne District approved it. The board also released for bid the lease of land and water rights near Discovery Elementary. Also the board is asking bid on the salvage rights to the old Lapoint Elementary School building. All bids will be open in two weeks. Park City, now a ski resort for Utah residents and tourists was destroyed in a million dollar fire in 1898. The Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah was established in 1908. Strawberry reservoir was completed in 1911. Dinosaur National Monument Monu-ment was established in 1915 the same year the State Capitol was completed.
