The jjerican Red Cross and Stay Fit program began at the Vernal pool in ; January and each swimmer has the i m of reaching 50 miles. Metz and jjith reached their 50 mile goal in 2M ' months. ,i i thought it would take about six i months to complete, but these two I Smith and Metz, completed it in 2VS Booths. The program is held from 6 a.m. to 8 m.andthis week the 12 noon to 1 p.m. part of the program has been changed 411:30 to 12:30 p.m. The noon hour Ingram has had from 6 to 12 swim-Mseachday swim-Mseachday and Pope said, "There is ptatyof room for the swimmers." One ithelunchtime swimmers is Metz. She remarked, "You compete against yourself and your goal. I swim in sets. I w different strokes and take some , .start breaks after each set." !: Smith is a non-stop swimmer, who :j just keeps on darting back and forth in water in the Vernal pool, and his method proved to be successful as he reached his goal of 50 miles. "It took a tag time and I'm starting on another SMswim Monday through Friday and sometimes on Saturday. I take part in fcta.m.to8a.m. part of the program. Uetinthe water at about 7:15 a.m. and im continuously for 45 minutes. It ' feme about 30 minutes to complete a mile and I swim about iy4 miles a day. I keep on swimming until I get in 72 lengths. I just crawl all the way and I love it," said Smith. The 50-miler, Smith, used to be a jogger, but now he gains his miles in the swimming pool. "I used to run five miles a day, but swimming is a lot more fun than running. When I'm swimming I think about the day's activities and you don't hear anything but the water. It's real peaceful," commented Smith.
