Show I Chevron looEiing for plan -to ..build .'fertiliser pissst Officials of Chevron Chemical Co. we in Vernal last week meeting with tol leaders to gain information concerning the possibilities, for development of the recently purchased phosphate operations north of Vernal tan Stauffer Chemical Company. Richard Matzke and Bob Ternus "plained the three divisions of Chevron. Chevron USA Inc., is in irge of domestic oil and gas production, Chevron Resources, Mes the mining division such as Wean Gilsonite Co., and Chevron tallica Co. handles the chemical Apartment. AH three Chevron divisions will be working together in integrating the carter Creek and Whitney Canyon gas wis near Evanston, Wyo., where 'is being produced and the Vernal orush Creek phosphate mine, to bring w two together to form a major fertilizer fer-tilizer plant. A railroad access is almost imperative im-perative for the fertilizer plant, the Chevron officials pointed out. Manila is about half way between the Carter Creek gas plant and the Brush Creek phsophate mine. The phosphate is about 150 miles away from a transportation tran-sportation corridor. The Wyoming sulfur plants will be in operation by the summer of 1982 with a 20 mile heated liquid sulfur pipeline running to south of Kemmerer, Wyo., for loading onto insulated tank cars. The fertilizer plant will be where the sulfur and phosphate can be brought together at the most feasible location. It will probably take at year or more to consider all the alternatives and start making plans for the new plant, the officials stated. Fred Riding, manager at Chevron's Brush Creek mine said that phosphate production is scheduled to increase about 50 percent in the next three to four years without much change in the local operations. Mr. Matzke stated that the lack of water and transportation were the i biggest problems in making the ' western phosphate profitable. We have the sulfur and the phosphate, now we need to penetrate the market to get a fertilizer plant to run efficiently. "We will need help, cooperation and lot of good luck," he stated. |
