This means you'll use no electricity while you're gone. Right? WRONG It is a misconception by many people, that when they leave on vacation, their electric meter stops until they return. If they are on a vacation for two weeks, they expect their electric bill to decline to one-half the normal monthly usage. Before making these assumptions, consider the following: 1. Remember, if the electric water heater is left on during vacation, it will continue to operate and maintain the tank temperature, even if you are not using any hot water. 2. If the refrigerator is left on, it will continue tooperate to maintain the preset pre-set temperature. 3. Unless you are on an extended vacation, it may not be practical to empty your freezer w hile you are gone. 5k). it keeps running to maintain the temperature you have it set for. 4. Other appliances that keep using electricity while you are gone are clocks, TV's with instant-on features, and automatic lighting, to name just a few. 5. Also, when you return, you more than likely will give your electric water heater a work out as you catch up on laundry chores Before leaving on vacation you may want to try the following: 1. Disconnect all appliances not in use. Either unplug them or, in the case of the water heater, turn it off at the circuit breaker. 2. Be sure all lights are off. Just one 100-watt bulb left burning continuously for two weeks can use more than $1 worth of electricity. 3. Read your meter on the day you leave and upon your return. By getting these readings, you can determine the kilowatt hour usage during your vacation. Remember-even though you are away from home, the electrical requirement for power in the home still cxk.I.s Only you can decide whether the electric meter gels a vacation while you're gone |
