Vernal loses no-ih otftfer First the good news. Vernal's all-stars all-stars had a 1-0 lead in the first inning of a Bronco Regional Tournament game in Vernal August 5 against Aurora, Colo. Now for the bad news. The Vernal crew was downed by Aurora 11 to 1 and dropped a 13-0 game to Pocatello, Idaho, Aug. 4 in the first round of the regional tournament. Vernal was only behind 1 to 0 after two innings, but Pocatello erupted for 12 runs .and thumped Vernal 13 to 0. Bart Taylor was the lead off batter for Vernal in the top of the first inning and he struck out. Mike Schiller flied out to the centerfield and Rick Shewell grounded out. Pocatello's first two batters, Jerry Coffman and Mike Bayless, grounded out and Todd Webb was walked. However, Webb was stranded when Kelly Smith struck out in the bottom of the first inning. Vernal was retired one, two, three in the top of the second inning in-ning as Greg Jaramillo flied out, Brett Weldon struck out and Kenny Mohar grounded out. The Pocatello crew scored one run in the bottom of the second inning to take a lead of 1 to 0. Scott Swallow grounded out, but Jim Gibson and Trent Galloway were walked. Gibson scored on a passed ball. The next two batters, Troy Price and Travis Johnson, struck out. Vernal had a run scoring threat going in the top of the third inning as Larry Wiseman was walked and stole second base. Wiseman moved to third base due to a balk, but he stayed there due to outs by the next three batters, Todd Shiner, Ronnie Nielson and Taylor. Pocatello ripped the baseball for six runs in the bottom of the third inning and grabbed a lead of 7 to 0. Coffman smashed a double and Bayless was walked. Webb and Smith singled and Brent Marley slugged a double. Galloway and another batter gained a single. Coffman, Bayless, Webb, Smith, Marley and Gallowav crossed home plate. Vernal failed to gain any hits, walks or runs in the top of the fourth inning as Schiller, David Murphy and Colt Mortenscn grounded out. The Vernal hatters hit the baseball, bul they were caught and fired to first base by the shortstop, twice and the second baseman. Pocatello continued their scoring explosion with six additional runs in the fourth inning. Webb was walked and Smith had a double. Swallow, Mar ey. Galloway and Jerry Stifller sing ed. Webb, Smith, Swallow, Marley, Galloway and .Stiffler scored to give Pocatello a 13 to 0 lead. The Vernal crew had one base runner in the top of the fifth inning as Weldon was walked. However, Chris Miglon struck out and Wiseman. Kyle Smuin flied out. Pocatello won the game 13 to 0 after only 4 1 -j innings of action due to the ten run rule Todd Webb'of Pocatello nabbed a no-hitter no-hitter in the game and struck out five batters. Only two Vernal players, Wiseman and Weldon, got on base and both runners were walked. Wiseman advanced to third base and Weldon got as far as second base. Vernal jumped out to a 1 o lead in a game with Aurora, Colorado Aug. 5. Schiller and Shewell were walked. Schiller was tagged out at (bird base, but Shewell moved to second. Jaramillo connected for a singie, which drove in Shewell. Mohar was called out for runner interference. Aurora tied up the conb-st at 1-1 with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Isaacs was walked and scored the Colorado team's f:rst run Vernal was blanked in the top of the second inning as Nielson, Weldon strmk cut and Taylor grounded oul The Colorado crew picked up three runs in the bottom of the second Inning for a 4-0 lead.
