Show y Panthers gain 10-0 record The Vernal Junior High 9th grade Panthers improved their record to 10 wins and 0 losses with a 42 to 37 victory over Hillcrest in Salt Lake City, Monday. Mon-day. Vemal jumped out to a 10 to 9 lead at the end of the first quarter and increased in-creased their advantage to two points, 22 to 20 after two quarters of action. Vernal outscored Hillcrest, 10 to 7, for a third quarter lead of 32 to 27. The Panthers Pan-thers put in ten points in the fourth quarter to make the final score; Vernal, Ver-nal, 42 and Hillcrest, 37. Brian McNamara was the top scorer in the game for Vernal with 18 points. He put in 7 field goals and hit 4 out of 5 free throws. Also scoring counters for Vernal were Neldon Seitz, 8; Clark Emery, 7; Kary Hamilton, 4; Galen Turner, 3 and Doug Bowen, 2. The Panthers Pan-thers tossed in 17 field goals and hit 8 out of 11 free throws. The high scorers for Hillcrest were Yardley, 12 and McDonald, 10. Also scoring counters for Hillcrest were Soffe, 5; Trafie, 4; Bertz, 4 and Simpson, Simp-son, 2. Hillcrest put in 15 field goals and connected on 7 out of 10 free throws. "We proved that we are a good team, and that we are competitive with Salt Lake City schools. We played great team defense, which was the key to the win. Hillcrest has a bigger team. We (Vernal) didn't allow them to get the ball inside. It was one of our best games this season. It was an excellent effort by everyone. All our players worked well together. This is the first time that Hillcrest has been beaten on its home court," stated Vernal Junior High 9th grade coach, Pete Rencher. Brian McNamara had 14 rebounds and 4 assists. Vernal's entire team was selected as the defensive player of the game. The Panthers gained their eighth and ninth wins of the season when they thumped Rock Springs East in Vernal, January 15 by the score of 68 to 45 and crushed White Mountain in Rock Springs, Spr-ings, Thursday, 69 to 30. Scores by quarters in the game against White Mountain were: first quarter, Vernal, 18 and White Mountain, Moun-tain, 8; second quarter, Vernal, 32 and White Mountain, 22; third quarter, Vernal, Ver-nal, 47 and White Mounlain 28 and fourth quarter, Vernal 69 and White Mountain, 30. Vernal outscored White Mountain in the second half 37 to 8. White Mountain only scored two points in the fourth quarter. The top scorer for Vernal was Galen Turner with 15 points. He put in five field goals and hit five out of six free throws. Also scoring counters for Vernal Ver-nal were: Kary Hamilton, 11; Brian McNamara, 10; Neldon Seitz, 8; Clark Emery, 6; Doug Allen, 6; Doug Bowen, 6; Mike Weldon, 5 and Jim Abegglen, 2. Vernal connected on 25 field goals and converted 19 out of 27 free throws. The top scorer for White Mountain was Keller at 10 points. White Mountain put in 13 field goals and hit 2 out of 14 free throws. Brian McNamara was the number one scorer for the Panthers with 20 points. McNamara put in five field goals and hit 10 out of 13 free throws. Doug Bowen scored 15 points. Also scoring scor-ing counters for Vernal were: Mike Weldon, 6; Doug Allen, 6; Kary Hamilton, 5; Neldon Seitz, 4; Galen Turner, 4; Quint Slade, 4 and Clark Emery, 2. The Panthers put in 24 field goals and converted 14 out of 32 free throws. Rock Springs' top scorers were Allen, 8 and Kumer, 7. Rock Springs hit 18 field goals and tossed in 9 out of 24 free throws. The Vernal Panthers will host the Vernal Invitational 9thGrade Tournament, Tourna-ment, Friday and Saturday. Vernal will battle San Rafael, Friday at 4 p.m. and Roosevelt will encounter Huntington at 5:30 p.m. The winner in the Vernal-San Rafael game will take on Craig, Colorado, Col-orado, Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and the winner in the Roosevelt-Huntington game will battle Rock Springs, Saturday Satur-day at 10 a.m. The championship game will be played Saturday at 5 p.m. and the consolation title game will start at 3 p.m. Vernal has deleated Green River, Wyoming; Ileber, twice; Sun Rafael, Canyon View of Huntington, Craig, Rock Springs, While Mountain, Range-ly Range-ly and Hillcrest. San Rafael has a taller team than Vernal does. The Panthers' 8th grade team was nipped by Hillcrest, Monday, 38 to 34. The top scorers in the game for Vernal were Kurt Robb, 12 and Gary Swim, 8. Roosevelt nipped Vernal by two points, 34 to 32, last week. Kurt Robb was the high scorer with 16 points. Vernal has a 7-4 record. They have defeated White Mountain, twice; Rock Springs East, Green River, Craig, Rangely and Roosevelt. They have suffered losses to Rock Springs, Green River, Roosevelt and Hillcrest.
