Show Vernal Panthers suffer double overtime setback The Vernal Junior Panthers were defeated by one point in their first game of the season against Roosevelt and they suffered another heartbreaker when they were defeated in double overtime, 41 to 36 by Rock Springs East, Friday, in an away game. "Rock Springs was up by only two points, but we had to start fouling and gamble to get the ball and they made their free throws. We played real well in the first half, but the third quarter killed us again as it did in the game with Roosevelt," remarked Craig Monsen, Vernal hoop coach. The score was tied at 10-10 after one quarter of action. Gary Swim fired in three field goals in the first quarter for the Panthers. The Panthers jumped out to a two point lead of 18 to 16 in the second quarter. Swim scored two field goals in the second quarter. Vernal and Rock Springs scored only two points each in the third quarter and the score after three quarters was 20 to 18 in favor of Vernal. Lloyd Merkley scored three field goals and Kurt Robb and Swim put in one field goal each in the fourth quarter and Rock Springs put in 12 points to tie up the game at 30-30 30-30 and force it into overtime. Both teams scored four points each in the first overtime period to put the game into a second overtime due to a 34-34 34-34 tie. Merkley and Swim scored points for Vernal in the first overtime. Rock Springs outscored Vernal, 6 to 2, in the second overtime to win the contest by the score of 41 to 36. Robb scored Vernal's only field goal in the second overtime. Swim scored 14 points on seven field goals and Merkley put in six field goab for 12 points. Robb tossed in six points. Jimmy Hamilton and Tony Lewis scored two points. Vernal put in 18 field goals and was 0 for 2 at the foul line. |
