Show Vernal girls' hoopsters defeat Eagles The Vernal Junior High girls' hoop team toppled Duchesne in Vernal, ' Thursday for their second victory of the season. Leda Cody put in two field goals to give Vernal a 4 to 2 lead after one quarter. Vernal scored eight points on two field goals by Cody and field goals by Marcie McNeill and Cindy Anderson to take a 12-4 advantage in the second quarter. Andy Critton scored Vernal's only points in the third quarter on a free throw and Duchesne put in five points to cut Vernal's lead to 13 to 9. Tia Liebhardt, Sheryl Neal and Kim Drollinger fired in field goals and Neal popped in a free throw in the fourth quarter to make the final score: Vernal, Ver-nal, 20 and Duchesne, 16. Scoring points for Vernal were: Cody, 8; Neal, 3; Liebhardt, 2; Drollinger, 2; McNeill, 2; Anderson, 2 and Critton, 1. Leslie Peterson fired in 12 points for Duchesne and Suzanne Foy scored three points. Lacona Brady scored one point. Vernal suffered their first loss in the season when they were toppled by Rock Springs East, 26 to 19, Friday. The Panthers actually lost the game in the first quarter when Rock Springs blanked Vernal, 10 to 0. The score at the end of the second quarter was 14 to 6. The Panthers won the third quarter, 11 to 5. Liebhardt and Drollinger fired in two field goals each and Cody popped in one free throw. The score at the end of the third quarter was 19 to 15 in favor of Rock Springs. The final score was Rock Springs, 26 and Vernal, 19. Neal fired in eight points for the Panthers and Liebhardt put in six points. Drollinger scored four points and Cody tossed in one point. Fontin was the top scorer for Rock Springs with eight points. "We (Vernal) were behind by one point in the fourth quarter, but Rock Springs pulled away," said Louise Murch, Vernal hoop coach. |
