Show Allowance made on cost of Red Fleet Dam Design and construction costs to modify Red Fleet Dam that were necessary because of safety of dam requirements will not have to be paid by local citizens, it was announed this week by Bill Plummer, Upper Colorado Regional Director of the Water and Flower Resources Service. Red Fleet Dam, the main storage feature of the Jensen Unit,, of the Central Utah Project, cost $28.2 million to construct. This represents an increase in-crease because of changes that were made to make the dam comply with new dam safety requirements. Officials of the Uintah Water Conservancy Con-servancy District felt that since the increased costs were incurred after they had negotiated their repayment contract, they should not be borne by the District water users. The Congress agreed and directed the Secretary of the Interior to determine the amount of the cost increases. Nearly $11.5 million of the $28.2 million will net have to be repaid by the water users. This means that municipal and industrial water supplied by the Jensen Unit of the Central Utah Project will now be less expensive. Red Fleet Dam is 10 miles northeast of Vernal, located on Brush Creek. It is designed to create a reservoir of 22,600 acre-feet of water for municipal and industrial use, irrigation, fish and wildlife, recreation and flood control. The reservoir was partially filled last summer and if the snow melt and other runoff are sufficient, it is expected to fill next summer. A strict filling criteria was established and observations ob-servations are continuing to ensure safe filling of the reservoir. |
