Show old post office at vernon 0 0 Z q 44 la 11 Z V 19 4 I 1 I 1 0 A 1 zy gift left to right elmer E larson mail carrier miss ruth bennion mrs matilda bennion and miss lett left to right glynn bennion theodore post master has been conduct ed foi over 47 years mrs pehrson continued to act as postmaster until february 25 1915 when mrs Benn bennion ions s son angus who had learned the busi ness by clerking in the office was given the pos tion at the age of 22 As his younger brother and two sisters grew old enough to as sume the responsibility he swore them in as clerks and let them help with the work upon his remodel to holladay utah in 1937 his sister jud th w u as appointed postmaster mrs ben mon continued to act as assistant throughout the terms of her fath e er son and daughter until on july 19 1947 due to the resignation of the postmaster the office changed hands entirely being transferred to mr theodore M prop dietor of vernon cash store and a former resident of escalante and salt lake city during the period from july I 1 1902 to february 29 1912 the mail judith bennion outgoing post mistress the new post office at vemon vernon 10 4 14 f 0 ON t arlo ba basil A the vernon post office was es in 1872 with john C sharp as postmaster he held this position until 1898 during which time he served as L D S bishop of the vernon ward and became well known as a business leader of the region the post office work was transacted in a small build ing near his dwelling in february 1898 eric 3 pehr son another pioneer of vernon became postmaster and for about two years the office was kept in a room in his house the present home of his grandson sidney pehr son after the death of one of the daughters who assisted him and marriage of the other he moved the office next door to the home of his eldest daughters matilda P bennion who he appointed as as distant postmaster this was jan uary 1900 and in june of the same year mrs bennion moved to an other house farther south along the street the post office sign painted for mr pehrson by one of his younger daughters was nailed up at this residence and here the post office nancy donna olson el mer E larson mail earner carrier from the early gold mining to the west ibapah fish springs trout creek and callao utah and parker and tippett nevada and others was handled through this office which served as way sta tion between those points and a convenient railroad line other communities whose mail was hand led at various periods were ben more erickson and indian springs the last named being at one time the home of the rich 0 K silver mine which flourished between 1911 and 1922 before the sheep men adopted the motor trucks many herders winter inter ing their sheep on the desert re their mail by way of ver non during the recent war the office again became useful to the desert dwellers when it served a large group of constructions work ers and their families who spent several months near the dugway proving ground throughout its entire history the office has never been robbed this year of vernon postal service is marked by another change the old faust to vernon star route in operation since oct ober 1913 was discontinued aug I 1 and a new route running from tooele thoele to vernon and ing st john and ophir on the way commenced vernon has received its mail from a number of differ ent supply points since the office w as established center remembered by old tim ers for its ajax a store st john rush valley S ding on the old railroad which ran along the east ern border of the valley fairfield and stockton in 1902 when it was brought in a light carriage from stockton the mail carrier was allowed 8 hours in which to make the trip improved roads and faster means of i nave ndue possible to reduce the time to th the extent that the contractor on the new tooele thoele to vernon route will wil k r F I 1 1 I 1 1 ram be able to cover a much longer distance in 3 hours judith bennion elmer E larson vernon utah |
