Show Solarium Fund Drive Totaled J 6,707, Chamber Pvlembers fold Tuesday The Solarium Fund drive culminated this week with the announcement at the regular Chamber of Commerce meeting meet-ing that a total of $16,787.55 had been raised to complete construction and furnish the hospital addition. Adrien Taylor, Hospital Board Chairman, told Chamber Cham-ber members that the drive was wound up with a sizeable donation from Atlas Minerals Corp. of $2,000. She said that the history of this project began just over a year ago with a decision by the Hospital Board to request $20,000 in Revenue Sharing Funds in the 1975 budget to construct the much-needed facility. When the construction bid was opened totaling $38,149, a decision was made by the County Commission to open the budget to provide an additional $10,000 for the project. The Hospital Board voted to conduct a public fund drive for the additional $8,194 needed for construction. The Woman's Literary Club, which has worked in support of civic projects in Moab for over 75 years, took on the fund drive as a special project, with club president, Jen Pope as coordinator. Mrs. Taylor reported that a total of $10,000 was received from three large industries in the area. Atlas Minerals donated $2,000; TexasGulf, Inc. donated $3,000 and Rio Algom Corp. donated $5,000. Individual people, she said, accounted for some $4,000 in donations, an average of $16 per person or $30 per couple among the 250-some persons who gave. In addition there was a total of $600 given in memorials to dead loved ones and friends. About 30 local businesses gave an average of $40 each to the fund, for a total of $1,200 raised in this area; and a total of 16 local organizations raised over $1,000 through special projects and other activities. It was especially noted that students at Southeast Elementary Elemen-tary School raised $211.43 for children's furniture in the Solarium, by holding a donations dona-tions contest in lieu of exchanging Christmas presents. pres-ents. A number of other specific items hasve been given for the room, said Mrs. Taylor. The Moab Rotary Club voted to purchase a color television set. The Nurses Association raised money through a special project to buy a geriatric wheel chair with built-in table; Bob's Tropical offered to furnish a large aquarium; and Dave May offered plants for the room. Esther Keyser gave one of her paintings to the room; and Willis Hanson offered a hand-hooked rug. In addition, Rose Chacon gave a sofa and chair set. The laying of carpet is expected, to be completed in the near future, and furnishings, furnish-ings, either purchased or given, will then be installed in the Solarium. Mrs. Taylor said an official dedication and open house will be held some time in February, with invitation's going to all who donated to the project. |
