Show Jack Carlson Reports to Kleppe on Kaiparowits At the request of Secretary of the Interior, Thomas Kleppe, Utah Republican Senatorial Sen-atorial Candidate, Jack Carlson, Carl-son, recently presented a report recommending approval approv-al of the Kaiparowitz power project in southeastern Utah. Secretary Kleppe asked that Carlson's report be made in Washington, before he comes to Utah later this month for an on-site inspection tour of the Kaiparowitz plateau. Carlson, a former assistant secretary under Kleppe, said, "The location of the Kaiparowitz Kaiparo-witz plant is one of the three best locations for this type of development in the entire nation." "The Kaiparowitz project is particularly good for Utah," said Carlson. "It will allow our State to receive additional payment for its water, coal, and labor." Energy Independence Carlson told the Secretary that, "Kaiparowitz would free the United States from importing import-ing 125,000 barrels of oil per day. Kaiparowitz is important to this nation's goal of energy independence." Pointing out that the best environmental technology a-vailable a-vailable will be utilized in the Kaiparowitz construction, Carlson said, "Protection of the environment is vitally important in my State, but this project is environmentally sound." Carlson told Secretary Kleppe that, "18 of the electricity Kaiparowitz will generate is not yet spoken for. That means," he added, "nearly one-fifth of the plant's power could be used by the State of Utah." "The economic benefits to Utah are many," stated Carlson. "It will provide needed jobs, public services, -an increased tax base, planned residential developments, and other benefits." |
