Show t Green River ) jj A Letter from Pearl, lona and Barbara... Protest New School Plan Concerned parents and taxpayers tax-payers are planning to present a petition to the School Board on May 19, protesting the plan of the new elementary school building under construction. A group of local people will drive to Huntington on the 19th to meet with the Board at 5; anyone interested in going is asked to get in touch with ''. Myrna Watterson or Nancy Dunham. ; When parents saw the plans ' this week, and found that the building was being construct- ed for open concept arrangement arrange-ment of the first 6 grades, a ' great deal of concern was ; generated. Many of the ij parents have had children '!, exposed to this system, wherein the children of several 3 grades are all mixed together J with minimal or no wall a separation of classes. They have concluded that this i permissiveness endangers the ; learning experience. Other f parents have had relatives or j friends express disapproval of i this open concept design, and all are aware of its failure in t several communities with the ? consequent expense of rebuilding re-building the new schools. Over 100 names have been signed to the petition. Teachers who have tried to cope with this open concept situation state that the teacher-child relationship is almost destroyed and the record keeping and paper work almost preclude any teaching. Few, if any, of the local teachers are trained in this discipline. The petition which will be presented to the School Board requests that permanent walls and halls be built into the school during its construction. Open concept and levelling systems are under fire nationally, nation-ally, with parents concerned that the teaching profession is progressing right out of business as far as educating i students is concerned, i Sing America Sing A Bicentennial program based on 200 years of songs was presented by the Elementary Element-ary School on Thursday with Mrs. Carol Durrant as Music Director.
