Show Safari Trail .. . Flat Pass is Most Rugged Trail for 1976 Flat Pass is rated as the most rugged trail of the 1976 Safari offeringsbut is also rated as the most scenic trail in southeastern Utah. This is the second year that this trail has been included on the Safari and it is being led by Del Stephens. The route begins in upper Spanish Valley and follows an old wagon road over the northern Spanish Valley rim and down into scenic Mill Creek Canyon. The wagon trail was blazed by early pioneers at the turn of the century in an attempt to bring water into the valley. The narrow route is carved from solid sandstone and has some short pitches that are so steep that even the hardiest, experienced driver will be challenged. This run is only recommended for short wheel base vehicles with limited overhang, front and rear. After the trail drops into Mill Creek Canyon, it is a matter of continuing to forge down the canyon, crossing the mountain stream numerous times. Relief for the harried driver comes when the canyon finally widens enough to accomodate the Ray Shumway farm. At this point, it is a short climb out of the canyon into Moab Valley near the Moab Golf Course. The Flat Pass trail stays near Moab all the way and is extremely beautiful, but very challenging. Those who are equipped and prepared to -follow Del on this rough trail are in for a real treat. |
