Something look wrong with this opening sentence from a letter? A student recently asked why he should have to know about commas, periods, semicolons, semi-colons, and hyphens. The simplest answer is that they are part of the English language the language he uses to communicate with other people. It is becoming increasingly more difficult for young people and old alike, in our society, to write letters properly. Many scholars believe this is because be-cause we are becoming more dependent upon spoken communication com-munication than upon written communication. "Spelling represents the spoken word put into writing," someone once said. Punctuation Punctua-tion marks are necessary when writing, but not when speaking. speak-ing. Can your children write a letter in a proper fashion? When was the last time they wrote to someone? Before letter writing becomes be-comes a lost art in your family, why not gather your family together and each of you write a letter to a friend or loved one? Do it often. |
