Show Big visitor season anticipated at Glen Canyon Rec. Area Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Arizona-Utah, where visitation visita-tion doubled last year over the previous year, is preparing pre-paring for another record season. Superintendent Temple Reynolds said the pace of advance reservations for houseboats and accommodations accommo-dations exceeds that of last year, when more than 2 million persons visited the area. Glen Canyon embraces the 186-mile-long Lake Powell and an area of IV million acres. Reynolds said all four developed areas on the lake are open and will provide a full range of visitor services through through the year. They are at Wahweap, near Glen Canyon Dam at the extreme southern end of the lake; at Bullfrog and Hall's Crossing, about 96 miles up the lake; and at Hite, 139 miles up-lake from the dam. There is highway access to each of the developed areas, with developed campsites available at all areas except Hite. Reynolds said the lake elevation stabilized at 3622 following the winter long drawdown and has begun to increase as spring warming begins the snowmelt in the Upper Colorado River Basin. Based on a generous winter snowpack, runoff is expected to raise the lake elevation by 30 to 40 feet during the year. |
