Easy trip to Musselman Arch I provides great look at area A neW Safari trail has ;' heen planned this year for i those who want a fairly : T four-wheel dnve tnp Jo some really beautiful 5 country- The trip, up one '0f the most spectacular yon roads in the world, jnd down the famous ."Shafer Trail, stops at Musselman Arch on the ' -'White Rim in Canyon-s Canyon-s . imds National Park, and jj being led by Moab auto i serviceman, Charles Lov- ) ' MrLovingood will de- - part Moab at 9 a.m. with . his 30 vehicles (limits on - this one set by the Park ' - Service), and will drive ' northward on U.S. 163 to - Utah Highway 279, the - Potash Road, where the :: caravan will turn down the 1 "national award-winning !:' scenic highway. At Long Canyon, some i twenty miles downstream 'and near the famous Jug-; Jug-; handle Arch, the caravan ' will turn up the canyon , 'and begin climbing the 1 ; jteep and winding Long ' Canyon road. This road 'was built originally by construction workers buil- ding the Potash Plant, 7 prior to completion of r'Utah Highway 279. ; After emerging from '.Long Canyon on "Pucker Pass," the caravan will t : cross the Island in the Sky 'l area of the Park in the I vicinity of Dead Horse 1 Point State Park, and will j then proceed down Shafer H Trail, a good road, but wild-looking, especially to 1 flat-landers. After negotiating negot-iating all of Shafer Trail's switchbacks and arriving on the White Rim, the i caravan will again proceed i , down the Colorado River drainage to Musselman Arch a spectacular span on the White Rim, where lumch stop will allow visitors visit-ors plenty of time for picture taking. The return trip will be up the Colorado River Canyon, past the Potash operation of Texasgulf, Inc., and back to Moab on Utah 279. As previously stated, the trip should be fairly easy, but should be a really enjoyable trip for those interested in seeing and photographing some of Southeastern Utah's greatest scenery. |
