Each year, the involvement of teach-ijjlf teach-ijjlf 'i ere and interested citizens r M has grown. For instance, the stu- "tnir! ('entsnave always written lull'j special invitations to pub- At Ik officials. This year, the t. officials were actively ilOn involved. Mayor Jacobs, County Treasurer Donna 1 Iveridge, and Mel Dal- on, former state repre-H repre-H I v, sentative, came into the classrooms and taught the Reft, students. Ms. Joan Gough, Media Center instructor at the Southeast school, has Wen groups of children j from Mr. Warren's class j to the courthouse for , meetings and visits with public officials. A slide presentation of these visits, vis-its, including a narration by the children will be a "first." Southeast Elementary welcomes back Miss Phyllis Phyl-lis Reed to the elementary schools. Phyllis is a creative person and an excellent music instructor. She understands the heritage heri-tage of music and relates songs to various events in history. Miss Reed will be working with Ms. Gough on tapes, songs, and pictures. Mrs. Jackie Roberts, a new teacher to Grand County this year, has been a levels teacher in Oral Reading. She volunteered to teach the choral reading part of the Constitution program. Under her direction, direc-tion, the students will recite the Preamblewith interpretive lines written by Mrs. Madsen's fifth graders. The students will also recite "The Coming American," a little-known poem written by Sam Foss at the turn of the century. This poem inspired Irving Stone to entitle his book Bring Me Men to Match My Mountains. And interesting sidelight side-light is that the teachers at Southeast agreed Mrs. Madsen's segment, "Salute "Sal-ute to Utah," should include "Trappers and Mountain Men." The teachers all knew the beginning line of Irving Stone's book; but could go no farther, with long distance calls even being placed. Thanks to Gloria Denney of the Grand County Library, a copy from an old book in Salt Lake City was made and sent to her. The students learned to recognize a valuable skill, how to do research, from her efforts. |
