Wilhoit, Wichita Western league outfielder, today ended his batting streak, in which he set a new world's record by hitting hit-ting safely, in sixty-nine consecutive games. The former record of forty-nine games was made by Jack Ness, Oakland, Cal., in 1915. , Wilhoit entered the game at DePauw university, Chicago, and in 1916 joined the Vernon club of the Pacific Coast league. PYom Vernon he Jumped to the Boston Nationals in 1917, but was later released to the New York Giants. The Giants sent him to Seattle, Pacific Coast league, but In May he was allowed to come to Wichita on a trade for Lefty Thomas. For a month after coming to Wichita, Wilhoit hit only .200. Then, on June 14, he started the batting streak that placed him in possession of the world's record for consecutive hitting. In the sixty-nine sixty-nine contests prior to August 20 he was at bat 299 times and got 151 hits, a percentage per-centage of .505. He hit five home runs, eight triples, twenty-three doubles and 115 singles. Several days ago it was announced that Wilhoit would go to the Boston Americans Ameri-cans the middle of September. |
