Show Prohibition will do more than any other one thing to develop the educational education-al facilities of the country and to encourage en-courage the making of citizens of 100 per cent Americanism, in the opinion of Governor Gov-ernor Bamberger. The Utah executive addressed ad-dressed the conference of governors yesterday yes-terday on the subject, and advised them that, in his opinion, they would be converted con-verted to prohibition within a short time In states which went dry just recently. "And I was not a prohibitionist," said Governor Bamberger. "In fact, though It was not true, I waa accused In campaign speeches of being a saloon keeper, because be-cause liquor was sold at a resort I owned. "But I have observed since we have had prohibition here In Utah that we see a different character of children coming com-ing to school. They are dressed better. They pay more attention to their school work, and they have better homes to live in. "Now we find that Instead of the laboring labor-ing man spending his money over the bar on Saturday night, while his wife waits outside In the hope of getting a little of the money, he goes home, and his arms usually are loaded with packages containing food and .clothing and other useful things. "Out In our state prison we only have 11S men now; and if you will go down to the city jail you will find it Impossible to get enough men together to form a chain gang. From our experience here, I am converted to prohibition, and I believe be-lieve you will find it so in your statos." |
