NInety-clKht pur cent of the steel workers vntinn on te Question of a national strike voted In favor of a walkout. It was announced hero this afternoon by W. Z. Foster, secretary-treasurer of the American Amer-ican Federation of Labor's committee on organization In the steel Industry, which cnnvaKaed the vote today. Mr. Foster said that the committee Is now taking up the matter of setting a date for the strike. The committee did. not give out the number of votes cast. The matter of setting a date has been referred! to a conference committee, Mr. Foster said, which Includes Samuel Gom-pers. Gom-pers. Whether the conference committee will proceed without Mr. Oompers, who Is on his way home from Kurope, remains to bo determined, Mr. Foster said. The strike question will not be referred again to the internationals. It was stated, as their vote gives the executive committee full power to act. Twelve basic demands will be made upon the manufacturers, Mr. Foster said, In addition to minor demands to be formulated for-mulated bv the twenty-four international unions which have members working In the steel industry. These baslo demands are: I Rluht of collective bargaining. 2 Reinstatement of all men discharged for union activities with pay for time lost. 3 The elg'ht-hour day. 4 One day's rest In seven. 5 Abolition of twenty-four-hour shifts. 6 Increases in wages sufficient to guarantee American standards of living. 7 standard scales of wages for all crafts and classification of workers. 8 Double rates of pay for all overtime work and for work on Sundays and holl-davs. holl-davs. 9 Checkoff system of collecting union dues and assessments. 10 Principles of seniority to apply In maintaining, reducing and increasing working forces. II Abolition of company unions. 12 Abolltioti of physical examination of applicants for. employment. These propositions are said to be general gen-eral In character and are subject to development de-velopment when the organization prepares pre-pares its trade demands. |
