Show RED FLAG BHD B MISS! Pass Ordinance Forbidding Its Public Display in Salt Lake. Salt Lake was put on record yesterday yester-day by the city commission as a place where the red flag of anarchy will not be tolerated. An ordinance making exhibition of a red flag or kindred insignia unlawful and punishable was enacted with unanimous yote and some zest on the part of the voters. The ordinance carries the emergency emer-gency clause making it effective at once. Initiation of the ordinance came from the law committee of the public safety committee of Pal t Lake, according to an explanatory letter submitted to the commission along with the ordinance by City Attorney W. H. Folland. The supreme penalty possible under city law is provided as punishment for those convicted of violation of the provisions pro-visions of the ordinance, being possible fine of $299 or six' months' Imprisonment, or both The ordinance follows: . "Be it ordained by the board of commissioners com-missioners of Salt Lake City, Utah: "Section 1: It shall be unlnwful for any person to unfurl, raise, display or carry a red flag, banner or badge upon or in any street or puhlic place in Halt Lake City, or in any meeting place or public assembly, or to raise, unfurl or display a red fla'g or banner from or on any house or building, or In or from any window within the limits of Salt Lake City, as a sign, symbol or emblem of or invitation to local, national or international concerted activity or propaganda, prop-aganda, either political, economical, communistic or anarchistic. "Section 2; Any person violating any of the provisions of this section shall upon conviction be punished by a fine of not more than $299, or by imprisonment in the city jail for a period of not more than six months, or by both such fine and imprisonment. The court may in imposing a fine enter as part of the judgment that in default of the payment pay-ment of the fine ' the defendant be imprisoned in the city jail. "Section 3: In the opinion of the board of commissioners it is necessary to the peace, health and safety of the city that this ordinance shall become effective ef-fective immediately. j "Section 4: This ordinance shall take i effect upon its first publication." j |
