Dr. Maximilian Kampmann, who gained considerable attention in Salt Lake' some j months ago hy posing as a psycho-tbera- ; pist or mental healer, and whose affair of j tho heart with a mysterious Salt Lake ; woman known as "Mrs. Smith," is alleged j to have, brought about his arrest and internment in-ternment at Fort Douglas as a dangerous enemy alien last fall, is. dead at the Third war prison camp of influenza-pneumonia. Dr. Kampmann, who was German-born, but had taken out his second citizenship papers in the United States, was well known throughout the western states and in Chicago, where he was attached to the German consulate in 191 (J. He is said to have formerly been a medical officer in the German army and to have been called back for service when the world war began, be-gan, but secured a certificate of disability and failed to Report. Active in Propaganda. It is alleged that about the time the United States entered the war he was actively engaged In spreading pro-German pro-German propaganda and that be made caustic remarks about the American government gov-ernment and sought in various ways to arouse sympathy for the German cause In the United States. He was arrested by federal secret service men in Los Angeles, An-geles, September IS, 1917, upon information informa-tion forwarded there by the department of justice for Utah. He was found and arrested ar-rested in Hollywood, Loa Angeles, and later was removed to Fort Me Art bur. From there ho was sent to the internment intern-ment camp at Fort Douglas, where he was Interned November S, last year. Since that time ho has been in the local prison camp. Dr. Kampmann was taken ill with a (old several days ago. He. developed a typical influenza-pneumonia, but the prison physicians phy-sicians had succeeded in pulling him through to a point where it was thought his recovery was thought to be assured. A sudden change for the worse came, however, and lie died in the prison hos-j hos-j pital last night. Career in Salt Lake. Dr. Kampmann first came to Salt Lake in 191T. and remained until some lime in Ifnfi. He posed as a psychic heaier and an expert criminologist and gained considerable con-siderable notoriety. In 1916 be returned to Chicago and was attached to the German Ger-man consulate there. He is alleged to 'br.vo been active In German propaganda at that time and when the United States entered the world war he is alleged to have come out west and traveled through . a number of states spreading pro-German j propaganda. He came here In July of 1017 ! and is alleged to have been active in his pro-Gtrnmn work as well as loud in his denunciation of the action of the government govern-ment in entering the war against Germany. But the doctor, it is claimed, tired of her and left here for Los Angeles to avoid j her. The woman Is alleged to have followed fol-lowed him and then Kampmann, it is reported.
