Show FOUR CYLIKDER MOTOR BEST BI COMPARISON In spite of the multi-cylinder development develop-ment of the past two years first the eight, then the twelve-cylinder motor there has been a decided tendency during dur-ing the past few months looking toward the greater development of four-cylinder cars of extreme efficiency. This is the belief of Bernard G. Byers, local distributor dis-tributor of Mercer cars, who goes on to explain the high efficiency of the Mercer four-cylinder power plant as follows: "Engineers of repute," he says, "in both this country and Europe frankly admit ad-mit that the four-cylinder engine lias more possibilities in the wey of development develop-ment and improvement than any other type of motor. There are not a few who have expressed themselves emphatically, statins that It is their belief that six, eight and twelve-cylinder motors have all been developed more nearly to their ultimate possibilities than has the four-cylinder four-cylinder motor. "The Mercer company has always maintained that more real common-sense common-sense progress is possible In the design and development of a four-cylinder motor than Einy other type. The Mercer motor of today is the result of the well-founded policy of building what our judgment told us was right, and sticking to It. We have not allowed fads, fancies or mechanical me-chanical features of the 'selling point' variety to sway us from the courage of our convictions. Satisfactory performance, perform-ance, from every point of view, should he the standard by which cars are judged. "A recent issue of The Automobile contained a comparison of the power curves of various types of motors and the four-cylinder Mercer motor showed that it had a higher power output throughout a wide percentage range of speed than any other stock motor built. "As it has been proven that it Is possible pos-sible to produce grenter motor efficiency and as cood or better car performance with a four-cylinder motor, at the same time giving simplicity and compactness of mechanism, we are more firmly convinced con-vinced than ever that the four-cylinder car will be the pre-eminent car of the future." |
