Simpkin Makes Plea for Recruits at Guard Station. iiY IG AMERICANS are those -i Americans who understand I J Americanism and who are brave enough to stand up and defend her rights and honor." Such was the message to several hundred youths delivered last night by the Rev. P. A. Simpkin, in front of the National Guard recruiting station. In an impassioned plea to the youth of Salt Lake to help maintain the splendid splen-did record made in the last war by Utah troops, "Parson" Simpkin told the boys that there were three important things for them to remember: "That we are at war, real war. "That the United States needs men now. . "That without victory the nation cannot endure." The Rev. Mr. Simpkin told the boys that many of them would have to go with the draft, so they might as well volunteer now and go with the regiment which will carry the state's name to the front. Day's Total Eleven Men. The second day's campaign at the new recruiting station , netted eleven men, making a total of sixteen for the two days. The Grand Army of the Republic Re-public has pledged itself to bring iu twenty recruits, while the Citizens' Training camp association has promised prom-ised to Bring in another thirty. Other social and patriotic organizations also have promised to lend their aid in the campaign to fill the Utah contingent of the National Guard of the United States to war strength without resorting to the draft. The following promotions in Troop C, First Utah cavalry, have been, announced an-nounced by Captain Elmer Johnson, commanding. To be sergeants: Corporal Corpor-al Russell W. Lund, Corporal J. E. Mc-Cardle; Mc-Cardle; to be corporals: Privates Harold Har-old C. Brimm, F. C. Beers, L. L. Ross and J. J. Kleespie. Corporal Harold C. Brimm, Troop C, First Utah cavalry, a resident of Park City, has been authorized by Captain W. C. Webb to open a sub-station for recruiting at Park City. It is expected expect-ed that from ten to twelve men will be enlisted at the camp for the First cavalry. Glenn L. Schluter, a Salt Lake boy, who has been living in San Francisco for more than a year past, has returned to Salt Lake and enlisted in Troop A, First Utah cavalry. Schluter is a member mem-ber of the Viscomeca club, a social organization or-ganization made up of eight young men of Salt Lake, all of whom are now members mem-bers of Troop A. Plan Meeting at Tooele. Adjutant General "W. G. Williams of the National Guard of Utah, yesterday announced that there will be a special meeting at Tooele Tuesday night when an effort will be made to raise a new troop of Utah cavalry. One meeting has already been held, and the coming session ses-sion is to interest a quota of 105 men into organizing a troop by showing what it means to town, state and to the men themselves: National guard recruits yesterday follow: fol-low: Wallace D. Word was received at the naval recruiting re-cruiting office yesterday of the acceptance accept-ance into the federal service of Dr. Hadley Howard Teter as assistant surgeon sur-geon in the naval coast defense reserve. The young man has been serving as an interne at a local hospital. He will be retained for work here in connection with the examining of prospective recruits. re-cruits. H.
