Show HAITI PROSPEROUS. Since the occupation of Haiti by the United States a wonderful transformation transforma-tion has taken place. The island republic, re-public, is very prosperous and the natives na-tives are perfectly satisfied with the j treatment accorded them. They also appreciate the utilities introduced into j all the cities aud different sections of i the island. American occupation has j given employment to the idle laboring ' classes, enabling them to earn a liveli- hood. I has led to great improve-ment improve-ment in the streets of Port-au-Prince, and also the roads leading for some distance dis-tance into the interior. The result is a decided improvement in the mode of transportation, which is highly essential to continued prosperity and tho development de-velopment of the island. While these improved conditions are satisfactory to the Haitians they also redound to the material advantage of the United States, for continued peace throughout the country has enabled the people to work and be paid for their labor. The money thus earned has gone into the channels of trade and imports from the United States into Haiti in 1916 were more than 130 per cent greater great-er than in the preceding year. In 1915 they amounted to $3,806,072 and in 1916 to $3,775,064, an increase of $4,-968,392. $4,-968,392. The people of the island are paying more attention to wearing apparel ap-parel with the result that there has been a heavy increase in the importation importa-tion of dry goods. Hardware, tableware and many other commodities are also finding ready sale and the manufacturers manufactur-ers are paying special attention to the wants of the Haitians and are being well paid for their enterprise. Xearly all the provisions imported into the island come from the United States, French canned goods being the exception. excep-tion. As proof of the fact that the islanders island-ers are making great advancement it might be mentioned that there is a large trade, comparatively speaking, in-automobiles, in-automobiles, bicycles, motor trucks, carriages car-riages and repair materials, all of which are supplied by the manufacturers of this country. The development of agriculture agri-culture is only just beginning, but that there will be a good market for farm machinery there can be no doubt, and as we excel in this line of manufacture all such machinery needed will come ! from the United States. These are im- portant gains for both the Haitians and i the Americans. Unfortunately the in- ! terior debt has not been adjusted, nor the interest paid, the default having resulted re-sulted in materially reducing the sales for the present year. In time, if the people of the country follow the advice of the United States authorities, Haiti will get out from under the debt cloud and as the natives grow more prosperous and more civilized there will be less inclination to break loose from all restraint re-straint and attempt to tip over the government. |
