Show SPi IS GROPING FOR STRONG LEADER Man Wanted Who Can Take Nation Out of Wilderness Wil-derness of Trouble. MADRID, June 2. Spain is groping for a leader a strong man that will lead the nation out of its wilderness of trouble. Hamilton Fyfe, who was sent here by the London Daily Mail to study the national situation at first hand,, sends the following interesting account from Granada: I had been talking in the train to the lively Andalusian and his more reserved companion about Spanish politics. Or, to put it more correctly, they had been talking and I had been listening. They had assured mo that all would be well with Spain if she had a man. The Andalusian had drawn me to his side of the compartment com-partment to point out a monastery on a hill with a bull ring just below be-low it, and had said to me, "Curas y toros. Esa es Espana. " Priests and bull fighting. There's Spain for you! To put her feet upon the path of progress Spain needs, they declared de-clared and alrnost all the Spaniards Spani-ards with whom I have talked in these past weeks agree Spain needs a leader of firmer grasp and fibre than any at present in sight. And then, after a few minutes' pause, the Andalusian leaned toward to-ward me and asked: "What about Yo Horrkayl" He seemed to think it extraordinary extraor-dinary that I should not know whom he meant. Sill I was puzzled. puz-zled. "Write it down," suggested suggest-ed the other Spaniard. So he Andalusian wrote upon and handed me a sheet of his notebook. What he had written was "Lloyd George." "Ah," lamented the Andalusian, "if only we had such a man as that. He has spoken out what was in his mind, even when he knew that some of his own partv would not agree with him. He has put the interest of his country above that of his partv. His words thrill and vibrate. What a man!" "Yes, yes," the other Spaniard agreed, ''a forcible.-eloquent man. He is very revolutionary, no?" "No, no," I said, "riot revolutionary. revolu-tionary. Radical, if you like." The reserved man smiled. "Ah," he remarked, "in Spain all who want radical changes are revolutionaries. revolu-tionaries. Only revolution can bring them about." |
