AKI-X'OKD for road improvement :u the state of Utah was made by the state highway commission commis-sion during the bicunium just closed, according to the biennial report of the commission, which is in course of preparation at the office of E. K. Morgan, statu highway engineer. During the past two years 622 miles of road improvement have been made i;i the various counties of the state. Of this, 421 miles is in the form of graded roads, 1 1 4.5 miles represent surfacing work and 33.5 miles of concrete pavement pave-ment was laid. lost of the concrete work was done i ii Salt Lake county, where double strips of concrete were laid from the south limits of Salt Lake City to Murray Mur-ray and along Fourteenth South street, -wirom State street toward Garfield. A small amount of concrete was laid in Utah county, south of Provo. J n addition to the road surfacing and grading, the highway commission constructed con-structed sixty-one bridges in the state during the two years just ending. Of this number, thirty-six were constructed during 3915 and twentv-five during the present year. The bridges were of concrete, con-crete, wood and steel, tho principal number being of the permanent concrete con-crete variety. The department constructed con-structed a total of USi culverts, of which number 593 were constructed during dur-ing 1915 and DOS daring the past year. iLost of the culverts aro corrugated iron and concrete, this being a permanent perma-nent foi-m of construction. Roads Are Graded. The principal work rlorjp on the roads of the state was in the form of grading, grad-ing, and, as shown by the report, 401 miles of road in the various counties were graded and placed in condition for use of traffic. The surfacing work was less extensive, exten-sive, but i a more permanent and expensive ex-pensive grade of improvement. In this work the highway commission has used a large quantity of silica, which has been demonstrated to lie one of the most lasting and satisfactorv surfacing materials that has as yet been found in the state. Shale has been used to a considerable extent, especially in counties coun-ties where this material abounds and where it would require long hauls to deliver silica. The shale "has been found to be quite satisfactory, bu t is not looked upon with so much favor as silua. , ft ifi only within the past two rears that thy htate has begun to lay permanent perma-nent road surfacing, such as "concrete, and only sixteen miles of this pavement lias been laid. Also other smaller stretches throughout the county. Cache County. Graded roads About three miles from Cove northwardly to the Idaho line. About four miles between Trenton and Cornish. About one mile at Newton. One mile at Cache Junction. One and one-hair" miles south of Cache Junction. About six miles on the road extending from Logan west to Boxelder county. One-half mile extending ex-tending east from Hyrum. One-half mile at College. One-half mile between College Col-lege and Providence. One-half mile between be-tween College and Wellsvilte. One mile extending south from Wellsvtlle. Approximately Approx-imately four miles at the head of Logan canyon extending to Rich county. Surfaced roads One mile extending northwardly from Smithfiefd. Two miles in the town of TVellsvtlle. One-half mile south of Paradise. Carbon County. Graded roads Two miles from the Soldier Sol-dier Creek road extending northeastwardly northeastward-ly from Price. A few miscellaneous stretches in other parts of tlte county. Surfaced roads About six miles between be-tween Helper and Price. About four miles on the road extending from Price southwardly south-wardly to the Emery county line. Three stretches of about one mile each on the road between Price and Sunnyside. Davis County. Graded roads About one -half mile at the north end of the Farmington-Weber road. About One-half mile of the road extending into Weber canyon. Surfaced roads Over four miles of the road extending northwardly from Lay ton are surfaced with concrete. Also about three miles of the road extending southwardly south-wardly from Kaysville. Duchesne County. ' Graded roads Three miles south of Roosevelt. Five miles of the road between be-tween Myton and Duchesne. Eight miles of road extending from Duchesne westward west-ward ly to the Wasatch county line. Five miles of the road extending south westward! west-ward! y from Duchesne into Carbon county. Surfaced roads One mile just east of Duchesne. Also a few miscellaneous smaller stretches throughout the county. Emery County. Graded roads About one mile through the town of Clawson. About forty miles of the road from Green River to Mounds. Surfaced roads No appreciable amount of surfacing done during this biennlum. Garfield County. Graded roads. About ten miles between Panguitch and Orion; about one mile extending ex-tending eastward ly from Panguitch ; about five milps of the road between Hillsdale and Tropic. Surf need roads. A few short stretches were surfaced during this biennlum. Iron County. Oraxied roads. About twelve miles extending ex-tending from Buckhorn northwardly to the Beaver county line; about three miles extending northwardly from Pa rowan: approximately thirty-six miles of the new road between Pa rowan and Lund : one stretch of half a mile extending westwards west-wards from Cedar City. Surfaced roads. One-mile stretch near Enoch: half-mile stretch extending north wardly from Cedar City: two stretches of loproximaielv one mile each on the road etween Cedar City and Iron. Grand County. Graded roads. About ten miles between be-tween Thompsons and Valley City; about eight miles between Valley City and Courthouse sprlnes. Surfaced roads. A stretch of one mile between Maria and Santaquln: two stretches of about one mile each between Mona and Nephl; one stretch of approximately approxi-mately three miles just south of Nepal ; one stretch, one mile long, just north of Levan. Kane County. Graded roads. One stretch, three miles long, just north of Glendaie; about two and one-halt" miles between Mount Carmel Car-mel and Orderville; a small stretch of road .south of Mount Carmel. Surfaced roads. One stretch, about four miles in length, between Delta and Lynndyl; about four miles extending eastwardly from Delta; about nine miles extending northwardly from Hawbush ; about eight miles extending north through Scipio to the Juab county line; a stretch of one mile just north of Meadow; a stretch of seven miles extending west from Kanosh. Surfaced roads About two miles just east of Gunnison on the road extending to Sterling. Sevier County. Graded roads Two miles just south of Sallna, about 5 miles of the road extending extend-ing southwardly from Sigurd, one-half mile in the town of Monroe, one mile in the town of Joseph, four miles extending from Sevier station southward!' into Sevier Se-vier canyon, which stretcli of road was constructed by the state eonviuts; one mile near the summit of the Sallna can-; can-; yon road. Surfaced roads One mile just west of Sallna, one mile just north of Vermilion, four miles of the road extending southwardly south-wardly from Sigurd, one mile just south of Richfield. Summit County. Graded roads One and one-half miles just west of Kamas. one and one-half miles between Emery and Castle Rock, one and one-half miles between Henefer and Morgan, two miles just east of Woodland, also other miscellaneous small stretches. Tooele County. Graded roads Twenty-five miles of the Wendover road extending In one straight line across l he Great Salt Lake desert, paralleling the Western Pacific railroad; one mile between Wendover and Salduro, ten miles between Grantsville and TImple, seven miles between Timple and Dell, four miles just south of Stockton. Surfaced roads Three miles in the town of Grantsville, two miles between Grants vilie and Timple, two miles just east of Clover. Uinta County. Graded roads Three miles just 'west of Duchesne, eight miles between Duchesne Du-chesne and Vernal, one-half mile between Vernal and Jensen,' other small stretches-Surfaced stretches-Surfaced roads -No appreciable amount of surfacing done during this blennium. Utah County. Graded roads Eight miles of the road running westwardly from Elberta, one mile between Goshen and Santaquln, one mile between Santaquin and Pay son.
