Show TARIFF COMMISSION. President Wilson will select tho members mem-bers of the wor! Linen "s compciuation board in time to send their names to the senate on Tuesday. The naming of this board is important, but far greater interest will be taken in tho personnel of the new tariff commission. The president has made up his mind in the matter, but will not announce- the names until Professor Frank W. Taussig of Harvard decides whether or not ho will accept one of tho places. It is possible the tariff commission may serve a good purpose. I;n;ii the great partk's are comiu:-',(,cd to the idea, aud if thcra is a disposition to take the tariff out of politics it can be accomplished easily , enough if the members of congress will ; discard their theories and legislate in accordance with actual conditions. Tho tariff commission will be able to furnish fur-nish tho facts and draw the necessary deductions, but upon congress devolves the duty of making the laws. If the I functions of the two bodies of men can j bo joined tho tariff can be used both i as an offensive and defensive weapon in the coming trade war. Old-line treatment, treat-ment, however, will be of no avail. |
