Show MOBILE FIGHTS WAYTOMSfOT Capital-to-capital Car Now on Last Leg of Long Journey. This is a story of a hard fight against odds. The Hupmobile Company asked Pilot Salisbury of the capital-to-capital car to complete the tour .by January 5, so that the tour car might be on exhibition ex-hibition at the New York Automobile show, which begins January 6- Two weeks ago, when the last bulletin was issued, the car had just crossed the Great Divide into New Mexico and Arizona. Thev were making good time every day. I'hey continued to make good time while thev were in Texas, but when they struck Oklahoma City they were pulled up with a jerk. Apparently no one ever tried to go from Oklahoma City to Little Rock, Ark. It was a tremendous job to accomplish ac-complish this lap of the tour. The ruts were so deep and the centers so high that it was necessary to take to the open prairie where it was possible, and in other places to cut down the center with spades. Sometimes the trails disappeared dis-appeared altogether, but other times they crisscrossed and circled in discouraging dis-couraging confusion. Two of the best guides that could be procured in the country got hopelessly lost on two stages or the trip. From Oklahoma City to Little Rock stands out as the worst stretch of roads the tourists have encountered thus far. From Little Rock the party headed for Jackson, Miss. Snow followed them to the Mississippi line and made the river bottoms through which they had to travel a great part of the way a shifting mass of mud. As soon as the snow left rain began. |
