Show INCANDESCENT LIGHT to BANISH Family MEDICINE Chest HOW to CURE All MINOR Ills and SOME SERIOUS Disorders in YOUR HOME by Common ELECTRIC GLOW, Told by Physician-Do NOT NEGLECT to TRY It Because It Is So CHEAP and SIMPLE, Is WARNING THAT light possesses powerful healing properties has, been ;.nown since the days of ancient Egypt, when the sick were laid in sandpits in the sun. Recent years have seen cures by special powerful lights in hospitals. That the electric light in your home is a healing agent of importance impor-tance is a discovery of recent months. Just how all of us may apply this remedy at practically no expense is the subject of experiment ex-periment by physicians today. The methods described in this article will help, according to Dr. Ferdinand Herb of Chicago and other physicians, if not heal, wounds, abscesses, felons, diseases of the abdomen and the chest, bacUache, complaints com-plaints special to women, sleeplessness and a host of minor ills. ' "To give the incandescent light the place ! It deserves from the standpoint of health," 1 says Dr. Herb in "Beauty uid Motherhood," . it is necessary to adapt its application to i home conditions, to do away with expensive j instruments and to give instructions of 1 such simplicity that everybody can uuder-! uuder-! stand and follow them. This accomplished, j the incandescent light, though it can never ' equal sunlight, will do enough good to ban- (sh the family medicine chest and consign most ready-made medicines to oblivion." ! The common incandescent light of the I home contains all of the rays of sunlight, except the violet and ultra-violet. The ultra-violet rays, which are at the extreme end of the spectrum from the red, are of short wave length and are the ones which do not penetrate the body. They have been segregated by Niels It. Finsen, professor at the University of Copenliagen. by special apparatus and used with success in the cure of skin diseases. It is these rays in the sunlight which tan the skin, the tan being i nature's protection against the ultra-violet i ray's irritation. Everything else in sunlight, Dr. nerb shows, you can obtain froin the common j electric light in your home. You would not j be touched by the violet or ultra-violet rays from sunlight in an ordinary sun bath, any-i any-i how, unless you exposed your person out of ' doors, as the window glass filters these rays I out of the sunbeams. 1 The incandescent light principally Is j composed of red, yellow, green and blue i rays. It is this part of sunlight which has j penetrating power. Long r.go Drs. Kime : and Hortat.ler proved that these light rays will pass through a man's chest and still be I strong enough to make a picture on a photographic photo-graphic plate. ! ."Knowing thatthc innocent-looking in candescent light of ordinary use in the home is rich in red and yellow rays that penetrate' deepest into the tissue, and knowing know-ing furthermore that these rays decidedly influence the circulation and vital functions of all the body's organs, it becomes at once apparent that the incandescent light must Simple instruments, - which may be connected to any light fixture. "lue trouble has been that the lemedy is too simple. sim-ple. We all like mysterious or expensive remedies." The results achieved by Dr. Kellogg with his specially constructed instruments for treatment with light and his general treatments with baths of light are then reviewed and the beneficial results obtained ob-tained in local hospitals from the use of light are told. "These show," says Dr. Herb, "that with a few exceptions treatment treat-ment with lights, if properly and persistently persist-ently applied, will do more good than the best of patent medicines, no matter what the claims for them. "In home treatment," he explains, "it must be emphasized that it is the light and not the heat which brings the good results. The heat usually is undesirable. "The color of the light is occasionally of importance. The common white light is best for ordinary purposes. The red light is of advantage in inflammatory skin disorders, dis-orders, such as pimples and inflammatory deep-seated diseases. The blue light is preferable in nervous diseases. Red and bine lights may be obtained through colored col-ored bulbs furnished by the local light compa nles. "The strength of the light may be between be-tween 16 and 250 candle power. The weaker weak-er the light, the longer it will take on the average to accomplish the desired purpose. In all deep-seated diseases the strongest lights only should be used. The 250 candle-power candle-power light is taken as the limit because these bulbs at present ar? the largest sold to fit into the ordinary commercial sockets. sock-ets. Lights of D00 candle power and more are occasionally used by physicians. "The position of the body, lying down, sitting or standing, may be chosen, according accord-ing to the disease or the strength of the patient. . "The length of treatment is from a few minutes to half an hour, depending upon the strength of the light and the condition of the patient It is a good policy to start carefully and to increase the strength of the light and the time of application gradually. gradu-ally. One or two treatments a day may be taken. "The distance of the bulb from the oody may be regulated according to the comfort of the patient. The nearer the light the more the benefit unless the heat interferes. One way to prevent the burning sensation is to cover the skin with very thin white gauze dipped in warm water and wrung out lightly. "To get the fullest benefit from a given light a good reflector is indispensable. This can be purchased in any uxture store or made by a tinsmith. The reflector should concentrate the rays. It must have a polished pol-ished surface. "The reflector, the light, a piece of cord and the plug are the only items of expense." -t- How to apply light in the home for various vari-ous ills is then explained as follows : TOR DISEASES OF WOMEN Use only the strongest light, 50 candle power. Direct the rays against the lower abdomen. A few treatments will do away with th'? necessity ne-cessity of soothing remedies and heal inflammation. in-flammation. The patient should, however, determine by medical examination if any organs are displaced, understanding that light will not put organs back in place. FOR BACKACHE Massage and liniment lini-ment are good, but light is better, more harmless and cures quicker. Two or three treatments with a 250 candle power light will usually cure backache. If it returns no ordinary remedy will cure, and a physician physi-cian should be consulted, FOR WOUNDS. ABSCESSES. FELONS, FEL-ONS, CARBUNCLES, BOILS AND OTHER INFLAMMATORY DISEASES A strong light poured on a felon has been known to cause the pain to stop and put the patient to sleep. Boils and abscesses should of course be opened and the pus removed. "Not much can be expected in the case of consumption," says Dr. Herb, "though the application of light may materially ease the patient." ' In the case of extreme lung diseases it is advisable to ray the chrst from the front and back or the two sides at the same time. The light should be directed upon the heart. Remarkable success with light treatment has been obtained in cases of pleurisy with eflusiou of water ' 'ween the lungs aud the chest walls. FOR DISEASES OF THE ABDOMEN Tile patient should at first be sure he has not appendicitis and is not in need of an immediate operation. FOR ALL MINOR AILMENTS Neuralgia, Neu-ralgia, colds, earache, muscular rheumatism, rheuma-tism, indigestion and other minor ailments yield more readily to light baths than to any other treatment. In Dr. Herb's words, "This is the most important field of usefulness useful-ness for the incandescent light in the household. house-hold. WHERE THERE IS PAIN, THE LIGHT SHOULD BE APPLIED." FOR THE SCALP AND COMPLEXION Small clusters of lights are recommended the treatment to continue until an agreeable, agree-able, soothing feeling and a gentle glow of the skin are obtained. Cases are ited where falling of the hair was stopped and dandruff killed. FOR NERVOUSNESS AND SLEEPLESSNESS SLEEP-LESSNESS The electric light bath provided pro-vided in a cabinet the inside of which is surrounded by small globes is the best treatment. This apparatus, however, costs several dollars, and excellent results cau be obtained from one strong light In the "case of sleeplessness the light should be moved slowly up and lown the spine for five minutes just before gulng to bed. "The light cure is still in its infancy," Dr. Herb sums up. "There is much to - learn, but we do know that electric light baths should be taken as an ordinary hy-' hy-' gienic measure, just as water baths are taken." j Light is the greatest germ destroyer aud healing agent. At least 'ne strong light and a reflector should be a part of the equip- nient of every home and used frequently. They are found today almost exclusively in hospitals and the offices it physicians. |
