I., for thla city today to-day In a qualification test for government govern-ment pilot licenses arrived at the Philadelphia Phila-delphia navy yard, completing the flight 'of 165 miles in less tlian two hours. Two ! of the aviRtors who failed to reach this: city were compelled to descend because ! of motor trouble near Monmouth Junction, N. J., and one at Deans, near that place, j Engine trouble caused one of the squad to j abandon the flight ten miles from Hemp- j fitead. MWlmaji, with A. Blair, passenger, 3l:4o a. m. Captain J. E. Carberry, army signal corps, li :50 a. m. -- lieutenant James E. Miller, New York, 11:52 a. m. Lieutenant G. Osborne, 11:53 a. m. Both planes of the machine were smashed, but the men escaped injury, j Sergeant E. W. Noyes, with a passen- i ger named Meredith, descended at 11:10 ; a. m. on the outskirts of Monmouth Junction Junc-tion without difficulty. They will make ; the trip back to Hempstead tomorrow, I when those who reached this city will re-i re-i turn to the starting point. Captain R. C. Boiling descended at Monmouth. Stetson, Jr.. of Philadelphia, a passenger, abandoned the ; flight shortly after the start. ; With the exception of the machine piloted by Brickley, which was damaged in a thirly-foot plunge just before the j landing here, all of the planes, after cir-aliug cir-aliug over the battleships at the navy yard, made successful landings. Brickley end his passenger were severely jolted, 1 but otherwise uninjured, when thMr ma- chine clipped the top of a. flagpole and, I falling, buried its nose in the ground at i Hn anirle of 4n degrees. The machine was j f-llchtiv damaged. ' Most of the aviators had to be apsls'ed from their machines to the marine bar- racks at the navy yard, the intense cold ; haviner numbed their arms and legs, although al-though they wore special garments. Frozen moisture fringed their faces. Altitudes ranging from 2000 to 2500 feet ! were readied during the trip, the aviators I shaping tiieir course to Trenton, N. J., fol-j fol-j lowing the Delaware river to the navy yard. ' During the Journey tests of stabilizers I and other aeroplane devices were made.
