Show BY INSTITUTIONS ' hold rains Observance of Christmas Commences in Jails and Hospitals. j INMATES MADE HAPPY Trees Laden With Gifts and Special Music Are Among the Features. ; Celebration of Christmas commenced last night In the hospitals and public Institutions In-stitutions of the city and will continue throughout today. At the hospitals there were Christmas trees for the patients and for the nurses, and at several of them there were Interesting programmes of music mu-sic and other entertaining features. Today To-day there will be special Christmas dinners din-ners for patients and others connected with the institutions. The churches of the city observed Christmas yesterday with special services in the form of special Christmas music and sermons appropriate to the occasion. There will be no special services in the churches today except in the Catholic churches. At St. Mary's cathedral there will be low mass this morning every half hour from 6:30 to and including !):30 and at 11 o'clock pontifical high mass will be celebrated by the Right Kev. Bishop Joseph Jo-seph S. Glass of the Catholic diocese of Salt Lake. Music at Prisons. At the prisons of the city, . county and state Christmas will be celebrated in the usual manner, by special dinners for the prisoners. There will be music furnished by volunteer organizations, which will go out today and will travel from prison to prison singing and playing for the entertainment enter-tainment of the Inmates. At the hospitals there were programmes last night. At the Salt Lake county hospital hos-pital there was a special Christmas tree in the chapel for the inmates of the Infirmary. In-firmary. Useful presents were given each Inmate and officers of the institution. Music was furnished by the Murray high school chorus, which also sang for the patients pa-tients in the hospital. The old people at the infirmary enjoyed themselves like chil- dren and each left the Christmas tree with some little article to gladden his or her heart. This morning the nurses of the institution insti-tution will sing for the patients in the hospital and special dinner will be served at noon to all those able to partake of the Christmas food. There was uo special spe-cial celebration for the nurses. At Holy Cross hospital there was a Christmas tree last night for the nurses. Presents from home and from friends were distributed. This morning there will be a Christmas tree in each of the hospital wards for the patients and presents from friends and relatives will be distributed from these to the patients. " Members of the high school orchestra 4k. and chorus were at the hospital last night and rendered music for an hour or more. High mass was celebrated in the chapel of the institution at midnight. It is expected expect-ed that more music will be furnished today to-day by volunteer musical organizations. Nurses Enjoy Tree. At St. Mark's hospital exercises were held in the hospital and in the nurses' home. There was a Christmas tree for the nurses from which presents from friends and relatives were distributed and there was alto a tree in the hospital proper from which presents were distributed distrib-uted to the patients of the institution. A chorus from the Y. W. C. A. visited the institution yesterday and went through the wards singing Christmas carols. Tonight To-night there is to be a reception tendered the nurses of the training school at the nurses' home. An interesting programme was given in Ensign chapel ut the L. D. S. hospital. The nurses were invited to join in this celebration and a programme of music and addresses was carried out. Apostle Heber ! J. Grant was the chief speaker of the jevenlng and delivered a brief and intcr-iestlng intcr-iestlng talk to the nurses and others pres- ent. After the regular programme the nurses retired to their home and had a Christmas Christ-mas tree celebration. They report that I they had a most enjoyable time. Christ-: Christ-: mas trees for the various wards of the hospitals will be in place today and pres-1 pres-1 ents will be distributed to the patients : from these. Volunteer musical organizations organiza-tions probably will furnish music for the patients during the day. State Prison Plans. At the stat prison today Christmas will be observed In the usual manner. There will be a meeting in the chapel during dur-ing the day at which brief talks will be made and a special musical programme will be carried out. Then at the noon hour special Christmas dinners will be served to all the prisoners by the warden. Those who may receive remembrances from the outside, not 1 in violation of prison rules, will have them delivered. At the county jail a similar programme will be carried out. There will be music for the prisoners furnished by some of the volunteer musical organizations and Sheriff Sher-iff John S. Corless will serve tiie prisoners a special dinner. Prisoners in the city jail had a brief musical programme last nicht furnished by school boys of the city and more music mu-sic is promised them today by singers of the city. The inmates of the Institution will be treated to a special dinner at noon. |
