Show ITS CHRISTMAS TREE KCE55 Fifteen Hundred Persons Brave Snowstorm to Participate Par-ticipate in Exercises. While fitful flurries of snow besprinkled an audience of l'&n, a choir of -too school children sang Christmas carols from the western entrance of the City and County building last night. On the lawn the community com-munity Christmas tree flowed bravely in lis garlands of electric lights. Mostly they wore old, old songs that the youngsters i-ang: "Christmas Morn," "The Virsl Noel,"' "Silent Night, Holy Night," "O; 1-jttle Town of Bethlehem." and then "America," in which the audience joined. The final song was "The Star Spangled Banner." Hugh W. Dougall, supervisor of music In the public schools, was in charge of the chorus. Georye A. Hatou, principal of high schools; Miss Evelyn Reilly, Lt. K Christenson, and J. H. Coombs were the others in charge of the school work, jfl Mayor W. Mont Kerry made a three- minute address, defining the true spirit of Christmas. He said that Jesus was a spirit that had influenced the ages, because be-cause his teaching was the teaching of love. Christmas should mean, therefore, not a time merely to exchange gifts, but to exchange loving thoughts. The community com-munity celebration of Christmas should signify the intent of the citizen to be a worthy citizen; of the official to be worthy official. This is the second community observance observ-ance of Christmas. It was directed by the Salt Lake City Federation of Women's clubs. The committee of club women in charge includes Airs. John Malick, chairman; chair-man; Mrs- J. T. Peless. Mrs. H. K. Schiller, Schil-ler, Mrs. Leafy Montgomery, Mrs. Fred W. Meakin and Mrs. R. W. Young. The accompaniment for the chorus was furnished bycthe high school band. After the close of the programme at the City and County building the 100 boys from the Lafayette school, trained by Miss I.eola Schrack. invaded tiie editorial offices of-fices of The Tribune. There they sere-' sere-' naded an appreciative audience. Owing to the illness of Miss Schrack, who was injured in-jured a few days ago, the children were In charge of Miss Clara Kener. and J. H. Coombs, principal of the school. |
