Show VERDICT OF GUILT? RETURNED BY JURY A. E. Pritchard, Former As- sistant Postmaster, Con-victecLin Con-victecLin Federal Court. The jury whi'h for the past foui days has been listening to the testimony testi-mony adduced in the trial of Alfred E. Pritchard in the federal court, charged with the embezzlement of funds of the. local postorhVo, of which he was at one time assistant postmaster as well as superintendent of nuance, returned a verdict of guilty on one of tho counts in the in diet merit dealing with the transfer of $.'VJ."5.M2 from the account of the present postmaster to that of the retiring one, A. L. Thomas. The opening address to the jury was made by Assistant Uuited States At-t At-t orney David S. Cook, who contended ! that, the government hail proved its case against Pritchard bevond a reasonable rea-sonable doubt. He was followed by E. Conway Ash ton in" behalf of the defendant. de-fendant. The concluding address wh3 made by United States Attorney William Wil-liam W. Ray. Judge Tillman D. Johnson John-son then charged the .jurv, which retired re-tired to engage in its deliberations. After being in the jury room one and a half hours the jury returned to the courtroom and asked for additional instructions, in-structions, especially as to the item of !'30.j5.32. Thirty minutes later the verdict ver-dict was returned. The jurors received the thanks of the court and were formally for-mally dismissed. It is understood that an appeal will be taken. The penalty for the crime of which Pritchard was found guilty is a minimum mini-mum of the restoration of the fund of which he was found guilty of appropriating, appro-priating, or from one day to ten years' imprisonment, or both. |
