More than 1000 happy soldiers, members mem-bers of the Second Idaho infantry, roamed the city for several hours yesterday yes-terday and tho reason for thoir happiness happi-ness was evident after one had chatted with any of the men for a few mo- T ments. They were bound for home. An- other fact that made their smiles broader broad-er was that they were going to get there for Christmas. After nearly six months of active duty on the Mexican border the men were only a few hours away from the realization of their hopes for months while in the south that they would be home for the Christmas Christ-mas fest ivities. The first section, carrying the First battalion, or approximately 500 men, arrived in the city over the Salt Lake Route shortly after 10 o'clock. Before the long train came to a stop at tho depot the guardsmen began piling off to unlimber their limbs alter the long journey from Colton, Cal. Given Warm Greeting. Many members of the Utah battery and the First Utah cavalry were at the station to greet the members of the infantry, who had become their friends on the bordor. Several officers of the National Guard of Utah were also on hand to greet tho officers of the Idaho organization. organ-ization. Within a few minutes after tho boys had detrained hardly a soldier was in evidence at the station. They swarmed uptown to see the sights that they had not witnessed for many months. Local moving picture houses and theaters wero visited by the returning guardsmen guards-men and tho stop hero was one of great activity. Tho second section arrived in tho city at 4:30, just when the members of the First battalion were forming at the station sta-tion for the entraining for Buise. Journey Is Resumed. The First battalion left at 5:30 0 'clock. VI embers of the second section sec-tion entrained again for the last lap of the journey at 8:30 o'clock last night, while tlie Third battalion, which arrived at 7 o'clock, left for the Idahu" capital at 10:30 o'clock. ; The members of the Idaho infantry, J will reach Boise tonight. As tho ar-' rival will be late, the men will remain in their sleepers until morning. It was announced that the members will be allowed to go to their homes after the arrival in Boise and thev will not go to the barracks until Tuesday morning. Mustering out of the organization will be begun Tuesday and it is expected that January 10 will see them back in the civil ranks. |
