A seventy-two-mile cale which followed a thunderstorm and sprhis-like weather early today played havoc with telephone ami telegraph lines I In the metropolitan district tonight. The i high winds were reported general in the ! territory between New York, Buffalo, I'ittsburu nnd Washington. In this wide, area hot h telephones and telegraph sc.-- t vice was affected, bu t none of the main j eircuits were put ovit of commission. Tiie Western t":i:on company .said the greatest great-est damage to its wires had been in the mountainous districts near Aitoona and around S'Tuiiton and Fittsburur. Pedestrians in the streets here were l:ept busy dodging heavy siuns blown from their fastenings or plate-glass win-' win-' dows shattered by the wind. Numerous ft men were run down by automobiles while pursuing their hats. Special squads of patrolmen were stationed around the municipal building, the Flat Iron building build-ing and other "skyscrapers" to rescue persons whirled Into danger by the force of the gale. |
