When in the course of human events it becomes necessary for one nation to cut loose from another and pull its own stroke oar, there is usually considerable con-siderable difference of opinion regarding regard-ing the best means of doin the cutting. A laro number of statesmen consume vast quantities of statistics and when they become properly loaded Ihey let drive. In the end they are generaliy successful in having their way about it and the small fry submits to their decision. Now, in some respects it Is much easier eas-ier and certainly quite as sale for a nation to rise and revolute as it is for a felloe- to pick an all-star baseball club at the end of the season. Still it has to he done. It has always been done. Keasons are wanting why it has always been done, and it is not for us to delve too deeply into the mental poise of tho guy thifl started it in the first place. If we did that somebody mipht take it into Ii is head to probe the mental poise of the guy that insists on continuing it. A Matter of Duty. Nevertheless, it seems to be the accepted ac-cepted belief that every sporting page at the close of a baseba'U season should have its all-league club. Being somewhat some-what new in the higher realms of organized or-ganized baseball, we hesitate to depart from the established custom. Hence we offer this morning a baseball club which contains, in our humble judg (Continued on Pace Four.) ALL-STAR CLUB FROM C TIE COM (Continued from Paes One ment, the best players in every department. depart-ment. Objection, valid in some instances in-stances no doubt, - may be brought against our all-star nino; but such objection ob-jection would have to be backed by no mean array of facts atid figures before we 'd feel inclined to back down. Since the departure from the league of Tub Spencer, Rowdy Elliott and Wally Schmidt, the catching department depart-ment of the league has few outstanding outstand-ing stars. Of those who remain, in our opinion, certainly one is a star. That is Harry .Hannah. Harry has had a wonderfully good year. As his running run-ning mate, Johnny Bassler of the Angels, An-gels, will no doubt be accepted as a fit backstop. The Pitching Staff. With reference to pitchers, some will no doubt inquire as to whv the high-priced high-priced trio of the Angels Hogg, Stau-dridge Stau-dridge and Zabcl are given such scant attention. The reason is that none of these glistening Cubs glistened with any degree of luster until the season was half over. Pitchers whom a manager man-ager is afraid to use cortainly are entitled en-titled to no place on an all-star combi-natkm. combi-natkm. Clint Prough of the Oaks wn!d probably have got in if he had been fortunate enough to be with a club that could help him any. With these remarks, we submit the two left banders band-ers and the live right handers whom our judgment dictates should be on the imaginary slab of our imaginary baso-ball baso-ball club. No one will question the fitness of Bunny Brief as the choice for first baseman base-man or of Swede Risberg as the choice for second base. Both were in a class by themselves. "Bobby .lones is picked for the third basing job over all the rest because Bobby' stops tho ball-'when it is streaked into his sect ion. Nobody hits a ball hard enough to make Ducky back up. As the choice lay between .Tones and Bay Bates of Vernon, the issue was decided de-cided because of Jones 's fearlessness and skill in fielding hard hit balls. About Shortstopping. As to the shortstopping place there is little choice between Marty McGaffigan of Vernon and Billy Orr of Salt Lake-It Lake-It is certain sure that Orr fields more seemingly impossible balls at short than any other shortstop in the league, and it is also certain sure that he goes after more chauces than any other. On the other hand, it is true also that Bill is inclined to muss up the easy ones. As Orr and McGaffigan are at even; on hitting, shortstop honors are award ed to MoLiaffigau on fielding. However as a useful member of a ball club, we would prefer Orr. Utility inheldei easily goes to Orr. Buddy Ryan's hitting would entitle ' him to an outfield job, if there were nothing else. But Buddy, since his ap pendicitis was eliminated, has played a remarkable left field. It has been a great year for Buddy. The Peerless Tommy. There is no use in Eaying anything about Tommy Quinlan. Every one knows that he is easily the best fly chaser in the league, and this, combined with his .313 hitting this year, gives him the centerfield job, and incidentally also he is hereby crowned the superior of all outfielders in this league. Besides, Be-sides, a ball club, even an imaginary one, without Quinlan 's aggressiveness, his alertness, his never-exhausted pepper pep-per box well that sort of a club wouldn't be worth writing about. Had Ping Bodic been kept in the outfield, where he belongs, and not been turned into a shortstop and a first baseman, base-man, no doubt the famous Seal would have finished with a better batting percent-age than he did. However, he batted enough to assure him a place on our all-league club, and his fielding ability has certainly not been impaired this year. Billy Lane becomes a member of oui family on account of his all-around usefulness, use-fulness, his speed in particular. With these explanations we declare our system empty, and promise not to pick another all-Coast league baseball club until nest November. |
