Show SENATOR S10T IS Attacks Policies of President Presi-dent Wilson; Does Not Touch State Issues. Special to The Tribune. BRIGHAM CITY, Nov. 4. The Republican Re-publican campaign came to a close here tonight, when Senator Reed Smoot delivered de-livered the final speech to an overflowing over-flowing gathering at the opera house. Miss Helen Todd, who was scheduled to speak here, did not accompany the senator, sen-ator, so the entire time ,was occupied by Mr. Smoot. The speaker did not touch upon local issues, but devoted the entire evening to a general discussion of the big national issues that confront the voters this fall, and began by making mak-ing an attack on the Democrats for claiming the credit for a number of the important measures that have been passed by congress. He enumerated a few, such as the parcel post law and the child labor law, both of which he declared emphatically were passed by Republicans and fought by the Democrats. Demo-crats. He also attacked the Adamson labor law, saying that it affected only 18 per cent oi the men involved in the strike and that these were among the higher salaried men. He said that the present prosperity was due directly to the war in Europe, and also accredited the present high cost of living to the same sourco, adding that it would be an injustice to blame that on the Democrats. Demo-crats. Before touching upon the Mexican Mexi-can situation the senator branded as untrue the issue raised by the Democrats Demo-crats that they have kept ,us out of war. After reviewing the Mexican situation situa-tion in detail Senator Smoot declared that there would have been no Lusi-tania Lusi-tania case if it had not been for the side-stepping and wobbling policy of President Wilson, and added that more stern measures and demands would have brought respect from all the governments gov-ernments with whom we have bad grievances. |
