Show MAN SURRENDERS IN LAND FRAUD CASE S. A. D. Puter, Indicted by California Grand Jury, Gives (Himself Up to TJ. S. Marshal. SAX FRANCISCO. July 26. S. A. D. Puter, who was indicted with seven others here yesterday by the federal grand jury for using the mails to defraud in the so-called "Oregon land fraud cases," surrendered today to the United States marshal here and deposited a bond of J1000. Puter left New York several days ago for Kan Kraneisco to testify at his own. request before the Jury, but was delayed. The government charges that the defendants de-fendants misrepresented the status of I government claims in Oregon and filed claims for clients when they knew the 1 claims were worthless. It is alleged that j the defendants made more than $:'Q0,000 from their deais. Puter, who is said by the government to be the leader of the men lndlcte'lr-declared today he bad nothing to fear from the indictment. "I have not misrepresented misrepre-sented any facts, I have committed no fraud and violated no laws," he said. Puter was a leading figure In the Oregon Ore-gon land cases tried ten years ago. Me was convicted and served eighteen months in prison. While in jail he exposed ex-posed the workmgs of his schemo in a book, "footers of the Public Domains." |
