Show IRISH RELIEF Fit 15 SENT 10 DIM Explanation as to Why Its Custodians Were Detained Is Sought. NEW YORK, July 2G. Of fi?crs of the Irish relief fund are awaiting an explanation ex-planation of the refusal of the British government to permit Eugene H. Kelly, treasurer of the fund, and his assistant, Joseph Smith, to land in England. The matter has been taken up with the state department at Washington and it is probable that, a meeting of the executive committee of 1 110 fund will be called here to take further action. Messrs. Kelly and Smith wished to go- trf Dublin, to distribute $50,000 raised in the United States for the relief re-lief of persons who suffered through the recent Irish revolt. Dispatches from London yesterday said they were, not permitted to land from the steamship Philadelphia at Liverpool. The only explanation thus far received, re-ceived, is contaiued in press dispatches, which said that as the ''Irish sympa-; thizers ' ' in America already had two able representatives in Ireland it was not considered necessary to allow more to go there. Information has been re- j ceived here that Kelly and Smith were permitted to send tho $50,000 ashore and that it had been transmitted to Ireland. ; Local officers of the Irish relief fund 1 asserted they could see no just grounds I for the detention of thoir agents. Their ; organization, they said, was strictly ! non-political, in spite of the fact that many of the members openly favored ; the cause of Irish independence. "Mr. j Kelly," said James D. McGuire, 'mem- ; ber of the executive committee, "was considered especially valuable for the work in Ireland. lie and Mr. Smith would have gone earlier than they did but for the fact that their plans were disarranged at the last moment. It was j therefore decided to send John A. Murphy, an insurance man of Buffalo, ! and John Gill of New York to Ireland first. Mr. Murphy and Mr. Gill left a week before Mr. Kelly and Mr. Smith and they carried $25,000 for distribution distribu-tion in Ireland." 1 . |
