Harker Succumbs Suc-cumbs as Result of Motorcycle Motor-cycle Accident. Benjamin E. Harker, physical director direc-tor of the Deseret gymnasium, died 3'esterday morning in the L. D. S. hospital, hos-pital, succumbing to injuries received Tuesday in a motorcycle accident. Funeral Fu-neral services will be held at 12 o'clock Sunday in the Assembly hall. "Ben" Harker, as he was familiarly known to hundreds of friends in this city and the intermountain region, sacrificed his life through his desire to avoid injuring others. He was riding his motorcycle Tuesday afternoon, going go-ing east on South Temple street, when an auto turned suddenly down Fifth East street, and in order to avoid a collision Mr. Harker turned his machine onto the la,wn at the side of the street and crashed into a tree. He was picked up unconscious, it was found that his leg was badlv broken, and he was taken to the L. . S. hospital, hos-pital, where the leg was set and he re-cceived re-cceived careful attention. Within thirty-six hours embolism developed, de-veloped, some of the marrow from the crushed bone having entered the blood channels. He lapsed into unconsciousness unconscious-ness Wednesday evening and died shortly after 11 o'clock , yesterday morning. Mr. Harker, who was widely known and universally respected in sporting circles for his ability, clean life, fairness fair-ness and his faculty of drawing men to him, was born in Taylorsville, March 3, 1S83. He was educated in the public schools of Salt Lake and the University of Utah, attaining in the latter institution insti-tution a reputation as one of the best and most scientific football players the college ever possessed. In 1901 Mr. Harker filled a mission in Germany, remaining there three years. Upon his return he was made instructor in German and athletic coach of the Weber Stake academy, Ogden, Og-den, where he made a notable success in his direction of athletic work. He left the Weber academy to become physical director at the Deseret gymnasium, gym-nasium, and to his energy, ability and high charactr is due largely the sue- I cess of the big institution. Mr, Harker was noted as a wrestler, i holding several state championships and being admittedly one of the best j referees in this line of sport, as well as in boxing. Mr. Harker is survived by his widow, Mrs. Abbie Cowley Harker; two children, chil-dren, Halvor and Helen; Ms mother, Mrs. Harriet Bennion Harker; two sisters, sis-ters, Mrs. Mabel Harker Cannon and Mrs. Edna Harker Thomas. He resided re-sided at 1730 Tenth East street. |
