Rowing as an fnlercollegiate sport probably will he abandoned by Columbia university in the near future. Official announcement to I ha t effort is expected within the next few dnys, and the resignation of the university uni-versity from the Intercollegiate Rowing association- probably will follow. Coach Jim Kice and tho members of the rowing committee have had great diff icult y in recent years in obtaining a sufficient number of crew candidates, not wi ihstanding that Columbia Colum-bia lias the largest enrollment of students stu-dents of any university in the country, lie has repeatedly .stated that it was impossible for him to develop representative represen-tative eights. Rice is known to havo been in communication with Cornell mon recently wilh a view to succeed !tn Charles Courtney as coach at the Ithaca unl ersily. Columbia crews have competed in every intercollegiate regatta since 1815 and won twice. 1 |
