Show SEVENTY-SIX GOLF PLAYERS QUALIFY GARDEN CITY, N. Y'., July 13. Seventy-six players with scores of 176 and under tumliiied in today's medal play at :iS holes, to continue in another double round on the Garden City club's links tomorrow, for the Metropolitan Golf association's as-sociation's open championship. Five of the dozen amateurs who competed today are on the qualified list, and one of them, Frank Yv. Dver, Montclair, N. J., is tic 1 for first place with Charles H. Iloffner. professional, of the, Phil moot club of Philadelphia, each having a score of loo for 36 holes. Dyer, who is a student of the University Univer-sity of Pennsylvania, last year -won the Pennsylvania stale championship title, played consistently in both rounds, his scores being 77 and 78. Hoffner had a 75 in the early round, and another professional, Emmett French, of Y'ork, Pa., had the same total, but in the afternoon French took S4, a total of 159. A severe thunderstorm which lasted throughout the afternoon slowed up the course and made the latter round a test of physical endurance, as well as golfing abiiity, forcing many of the contestants to withdraw. Among the- amateurs who retired were Walter J. Travis and Max R. .Marston. Alex Smith, the professional who won this event on previous occasions, did not go out in the aflernpon, as lie took S2 in the first round. |
