Show WOODLAWN CLUB IS OUT OF ASSOCIATION National Organisation Severs Relation Because of Amateur Question Re-" garding Ouimet and Sullivan. BOSTON", July l.'t. Tt was learned today that the Wooiilawu jjolf club of Newton, which supported its members, Francis Ouimet, J. II. Sullivan, Jr., and Paul Tewksbury, who were declared inili((ible to amateur standing by the United States Golf association, has been refused active membership in the national na-tional body. The club has held an associate membership mem-bership in tho national association, and applied recently for active membership. member-ship. Formal notification of the viiational body 's action has been served upon club officials, but no reason for it nas been given, it is understood. In the absence from the city of President L. B. Folsom, other officers would make no statement.' They said that a meeting meet-ing of the board of directors would lie called to consider the subject. Ouimet, Sullivan and Tewitsbiirv were declared by the United States Golf association several months ago to havo lost their amateur standing because of their business connections. Ouimet and Sullivan are proprietors of a sporting goods house, and Tewksbury is a salesman sales-man of such goods. Sullivan and Tewksbury have ben allowed to compete as amateurs at several sev-eral open tournaments, especially those of their own club, and the state golf association has kept them on its amateur ama-teur list. Last week the executive committee of the national body issued an announcement an-nouncement that auy club which permitted per-mitted a disbarred member to play in an open tournament would bo liable to be stricken from membership iu tho United States Golf association. In view of the fact that Tewksbury was entered in the Woodland club's open tournament, tourna-ment, which began today, golfers here have awaited with interest probable aetion ae-tion by the national body. |
